Obituary for James Garvin

James David Garvin, Sr. was born on July 26, 1930 to Tommie Lee Miller and Sylvester Garvin in Lake City, Florida. He joined and attended St. Paul A.M.E. Church in 1939 at the tender age of nine.

James enlisted in the United States Army and retired with a honorable discharge. He married Rosa Lee Carter in 1954 and they had five children.

James departed this life on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 and was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Tina Garvin, and cousin, William Ponder.

James leaves to cherish his memories a loving family, his wife, Rosa L. Garvin; children, James D. Garvin, Jr. (Gwen Garvin), Vincent Garvin, Valerie Norris, and Doris Stokes; grandchildren, Samantha Garvin (Anthony Patrick), Shelton Garvin, Clarence Dixon, Tonie Dixon, Maurice Dixon, Clinton Norris (Ellexia Taylor), James Garvin, III; great-grandchildren, Connell Sheltisha, Anthony, Antonio, Antina, DJ, Heaven, Clarence Jr., and Kingly; great-great– grandchildren, Connell Jr., and Cameron; and a host of other love ones, and cherished friends.


The funeral service for James D. Garvin, Sr. will be held 10AM, Friday, at the St. Paul A. M. E. Church 6910 New Kings Road. The visitation will be 5-8PM, Thursday at the mortuary.
