Obituary for Kenneth Dexter Hawkins

Kenneth Dexter Hawkins
Kenneth Dexter Hawkins, well known professional Jacksonville Transportation Authority bus driver and humanitarian, passed away on July 12, 2016. He was preceded in death by his brother Bruce W. Hawkins in October 2015, and is survived by; his loving mother, Emma Jean Hawkins; father, Sylvester Hawkins (Sarah); brothers, Andre’ Hawkins (Annette), Kendall Hawkins (twin brother); and sister, Cynthia Hickson-Starling.

Mr. Hawkins, a native of Jacksonville, Florida was born June 17, 1955. He was baptized and held membership in Mt. Olive AME Church. Kenneth received his early education in the Duval County Public School System. Before graduating from Andrew Jackson High School, he was elected as President of the 1973 senior class and Co-President of the Marching Band. Kenneth received a full scholarship at Tennessee State University and Meharry Medical College (dual program) in Nashville Tennessee, where he became a leader during his college tenure. He was elected President of Student Government, President of the Honors Program, and President of the Marching Aristocrat of Bands, all at Tennessee State University. Pierce, where he received five star ratings.
After ending his demanding career in the medical field, he found another passion and became employed with the Jacksonville Transportation Authority as a professional city bus driver, where he interacted with so many wonderful and caring co-workers and administrators within the JTA system. Kenneth received many awards while working for JTA, but his greatest reward was meeting so many kind and respectful passengers who enjoyed his professional driving skills, respectful greeting with a smiling face, and encouraging words.

Kenneth was a good and loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, and cousin to his family members and could always be counted on in the time of need. He enjoyed working in his yard and maintaining an outside environment that made him proud.
