Dan Porter was born on October 16, 1946 to the late John Porter and Lizzie Mae Carter Porter in Albany, Georgia. He attended the local schools in Albany, Georgia. Dan later moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he worked as a Truck Driver for the City.

Dan departed this life on Friday, January 13, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother John Porter, Jr.

Dan leaves to cherish memories to his loving and devoted life partner, Vascille Thomas; son, Fredrick Porter; daughter, Sheila Porter; grandchildren, SocCora Brown and Amir Schuman; three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Thelma Porter, William Porter, Dorothy Jackson, Viola Wallace, Leola Williams, and Charles James Porter; and a host of other relatives and friends.
