Obituary for IDA MAE SIMMONS

IDA MAE  SIMMONS
Ida Mae Johnson Simmons was born on May 9, 1944 to the late David Johnson, Jr. and Hilda Lawrence Johnson in Callahan, Florida. Ida Matriculated through the Public Schools of Nassau County, graduating from Peck High School, Class of 1962. She furthered her education by attending Edward Waters College, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education. For more than thirty years, Ida was employed as a teacher for the Duval County Public School System and retired in June of 2000.

Ida was a child of God, she accepted Christ in August of 1968 at Northside Church of Christ, currently under the leadership of Senior Minister, Charlie McClendon. Ida faithfully attended services, after retiring from the school board she especially enjoyed Wednesday morning bible study.

Ida became a widow at an early age with the death of her first husband, Emmanuel F. Drummond. This was a difficult lost, but Ida knew she still had much love to give. In 1981 and 1984 she adopted two beautiful girls, and on March 3, 1986 she married her high school friend, Joseph Simmons, Jr.

Ida departed this life on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Melvin Johnson, Sr.

Ida’s loving and caring support for so many will be missed especially by her family: a loving husband, Joseph Simmons, Jr.; dedicated daughters, Cicely Simmons-Carroll (Brandon) and Cyddra Simmons; devoted grandchildren, Jaylen Russell and Janiah Russell; brother, David Johnson, Jr.; beloved uncle, Eddie L. Lawrence (Elease); sisters, Helen Wilson and Gloria Johnson; sisters-in-law, Rose Ann Williams (Willie), Evett L. Simmons, and Irma Funchess; brother-in-law, Eddie Simmons, Sr.; stepchildren, Dorothy Ann Williams (Amos), Deborah Brown (Kenneth), Joseph Simmons III (Grace), James Simmons (Cindy), and Jeffrey Simmons (Veronica); and a host of grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

The funeral service for IDA MAE SIMMONS will be held 11AM, Thursday, March 2nd, 2017 at the Northside Church of Christ 4736 Avenue B. The visitation will be 5 - 7PM , Wednesday, at the mortuary.
