Obituary for Albertha Green (Simmons)

Ms. Albertha Brown Green was born January 4, 1919, to the late Lewis and Edith Simmons in Fernandina Beach, Florida. She was the fifth of 13 children who resided in Fernandina Beach, Florida for the entirety of her joyful and graceful life. She was the matriarch of the family and passed down her love of family, community, and giving to each one of us. Her house was the “hangout spot” for everyone who knew her. There you would experience joy, hope, unconditional love, and leave with endless memories. Through the amazing years of her life, Albertha had so much history and worldly knowledge that she could write a New York Times bestselling novel.

Albertha (referred to as Ms. Gerdie by her brother C M Simmons) loved cooking, driving, and spending time with her family. She did what she wanted, when she wanted, and no one could stop her once she made up her mind.

Albertha attended the old Peck High School where she finished 8th grade, but you could say she earned a college degree in living life. She spent her time serving her community, traveling with her family, and providing her infectious love to generations of the Simmons, Brown, and Green family. Albertha’s earthly work is done for now. She will soon receive her earthly resurrection, and no doubt will take up life with even more zest than before. This new start will arrive with many bonuses, including a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time. She will beautify her world again with family and friends, including socializing, dancing, eating, drinking, and reading, with great joy (Isaiah 25:6). Music, laughter and love are guaranteed. The food will be plentiful and delicious, and she will always share. What a promise!

During the years, Albertha received the best care from her special caregivers, Josephine McKinney (daughter), Kathy Clark (nurse), and Audrey Taylor (granddaughter). The family thanks you for the care you provided and continued sacrifices you made to be there for her. The family would also like to recognize Clarence Brown (her son) for being with her everyday over the last twelve and a half years. They laughed and joked often about Clarence saying, “He was a Brown and she changed colors on him because she was a Green, which he’d joked about since he was a kid”. Thanks, Clarence, for being her travel buddy, comedian, and caretaker. Ms. Albertha appreciated every act of kindness, word, and was thankful for everyone who touched her life.

Ms. Albertha is preceded in death by her 11 brothers, 2 sisters, husbands, Mr. Vander Brown Sr. and Mr. Sank Green, her children, Vander Brown Jr., Eddie Lee Brown, Gloria Dean Jenkins, Earline Green, Zell Gloria Johnson, and daughter-in-love, Ruby Brown.

Ms. Albertha leaves to cherish her loving memory: Her children, Albertha (Johnny) Aikens, Clarence M. Brown, Johnnie Mae Brown, and Josephine (Robert) McKinney; a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and cherished friends.
