Obituary for Annie Virginia Butts-Brown

Mrs. Annie Virginia Butts-Brown, born in Cordelle, Georgia, on October 8, 1934, was the ultimate multihyphenate. She was a daughter, wife, mother, aunt, and friend to many. Mrs. Brown was also a dedicated church worker at Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church, a cherished neighbor in the Magnolia Gardens neighborhood, a successful Mary Kay director, and a public servant elected to the City of Jacksonville’s Civil Service Board in 1991.

Mrs. Brown gave her life to Christ at an early age uniting with Mount Calvary Baptist Church, where she was baptized. She attended Duval County’s public schools graduating from Stanton High School in 1950. Mrs. Brown furthered her education at Kentucky State University and graduated from Florida A & M University in 1956. She later married her beloved husband Clanzel T. Brown, Sr., who predeceased her in 1982. Mrs. Brown was also predeceased by her little brother, George Butts, Jr., adoring daughter, Ava Marie Johnson-Kelsey, and devoted parents, George & Eva Mae (Rushing) Butts.

Mrs. Brown departed this mortal coil on December 24, 2022, to be with the Lord leaving a legacy of service, faith, family, and joie de virve to her children, Clanzenetta (Lee), Clanzel II, Clanzerria, and Clanzedric (Sandra) Brown.

Also left to honor her memory and manner are Mrs. Brown’s grandchildren (Angel (Bill) Johnson; Tina & Thomas Kelsey; Taen & Terrel (Komuni) Campbell; Viveca Brown; Clanzel Brown III; and Marcel & Vincent Tharrington), and great-grandchildren (Jordan Harrel; AvaRae’ Richo; Shannel, Ali, and Jerome Brown-Campbell; Taj Campbell; and Cameron Tharrington).

Mrs. Brown is also survived by sisters-in-law, (Pearl Jones, Doris Black, and Delores Brown), a cousin (Dorothy Gaskins), and many much-loved nieces, nephews, godchildren, neighbors, family, and friends.

The funeral service for Annie Virginia Butts-Brown will be held 10AM Saturday, January 7th, 2023 at the Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church 2803 Edgewood Avenue West. The visitation will be 5-7PM , Friday, January 6th at the mortuary 4315 North Main Street. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
