Obituary for Barbara Mack

On September 29, 1938, Sister Barbara Mack was born in Jacksonville, Florida to the late George Barringer and Willie Geneva “Willie G.” Rice Harris. She was educated in Duval County public schools, where her grandmother, Marie “Riah” Barringer Braxton Morris, and several of her aunts and grandaunts, worked as educators. She graduated from New Stanton High School and attended classes at Edward Waters College.

Barbara accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age. She attended African Methodist Episcopal church services conducted by her grandfather, Preacher J.P. Morris. She was a cashier by trade who specialized in grocery stores. For decades, she worked for her friend Tom Yazgi. Most notably, she worked at the store on 12th and Palafox. There, she made lifelong friends of the customers she served.

Barbara, or “Grandmother” as her grandchildren called her, was a jewel to her family: unbreakable, precious and priceless. She instilled pride, self-determination, strong family values and an impenetrable spiritual foundation in each of them; they are eternally grateful.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents; aunt, Ernestine Boston Rose Cox; son, Donald Eugene “Donnie Bee” Barringer; and two grandsons, Donnie Lorraineson and Toby Parrish, Jr.

Barbara left to cherish her memory: Adoring son, Charles “C. Edward” Mack (Bernadine); devoted daughter-in-law, Adrienne Michelle Barringer; loving grandchildren, Charles Edward Gee, Sr., Donald Eugene Barringer, Jr., L’Kescha L’Vette Mack, Priscilla Nicole Worth (Romaro), Natasha Elizabeth Mumford (Kennedy III), Barbara Kristina-Nicole Mitchell (Akeeno), and W’Riah Regina Mack; energetic great-grandchildren, Cecil Ríchard Edwards, Steven Charles Hamilton, Micah Peel, Nykii Davis, Kingston, Charles Edward Gee, Jr., Kennedy Mumford, Rhyann-Elise Chandler, and Kate Mumford; loyal brothers, Robert Harris (Norma), Arthur “Daddy” Harris, Rodney Barringer, Richard, Raymond, and Willie Harris (Ah’veh); faithful sisters, Annette Harris, Gwendolyn “Bea” Harris, Catherine “Pig” Harris, and Doris Harris Ervin (Willie Charles); committed cousins, Daily Nathaniel Braxton, Larry Bruce (Jackie), Woodrow Nathan (Vaughn), Jason Bruce, Jermel Nathan, Nonearl Nathan, and Arizona Love (Walter); and supportive close friends, Randall, Pat, Mary, Rosemary, and Hilda.
