Obituary for Barbara Sims (Wilkerson)

Barbara Wilkerson Sims was born July 2nd, 1945, after a courageous battle against cancer she transitioned peacefully at her residence on February 2nd 2022. Barbara accepted Jesus Christ at an early age uniting with Little Rock Baptist Church. She was a driven academic and socialite of the 1963 class of Matthew Gilbert High School. After graduation she pursued several careers under the civil service to include the United States Army Reserves, Internal Revenue Service, and the United States Post Office. Barbara continuously sought knowledge and became formally certified in the areas of Life Skills Training, Health and Safety and Financial Literacy. Barbara, in possession of these certifications, coupled with her energetic and nurturing demeanor became a foster parent and advocate for the disabled.

Barbara with the love of her life and husband of 38 years, John, fostered serval children over the years and was recognized as Foster Parent of the Year in 1998 for her exemplary work with children and the importance that foster care plays in our society. Barbara continued to pursue her passion with the help of John in establishing transitional housing for the disabled and special needs adults which provided life skills and real-world training. As a military wife and mother, Barbara developed a great love for travel. Over the years Barbara has visited several countries including Germany, Cuba and the Caribbean. Her favorite traveling experience was via cruise. Barbara’s signature style and poise was undeniable and recognized by all who loved her. Barbara was family oriented, she cared deeply for her siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family and practiced true friendship with loyalty and consistency.

Barbara’s role as a mother and grandmother was paramount, their happiness and well-being were her top priority. She enjoyed being one with nature which fueled her enthusiasm for gardening. Barbara cherished her membership within the College Park Gardening Circle. Her commitment to an active lifestyle provided the momentum for memberships in the Live Long and Like It Seniors Citizens Club, The Red Hats Club, and as a line dancer. Barbara was an avid businesswoman and astute in the areas of real estate and investments. Barbara approached life with boldness and confidence and practiced agape love with all that were blessed to know her.

Barbara was preceded in death by her loving parents, Rev. David and Albertha Wilkerson; husband, John Sims; sister, Zelena Crawford and son, Floyd ‘Cameron’ Capers. Left to cherish her memory and continue her legacy: sons, Alfred D. (LaQuana) Capers and Isaac D. (Jasmine) Sims; siblings, Rosa Whitfield, Delores (Ronald) Sims, Nolan Wilkerson Sr., Leola (Lafayette) Williams, Mary Preston, Shirley Wilkerson and Diane Hanna; twelve grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of beloved family members and friends.

The funeral service for Barbara Sims will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 11th, 2022 at the Grace Baptist Church, 1553 E 21st Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206. The visitation will be 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 11th, 2022 at the Grace Baptist Church, 1553 E 21st Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206. Interment in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
