Ms. Betty Jo Benton McClendon was married to the late Levi La ’Ray McClendon was born on February 11, 1951 in Dawson, Georgia. Her early education was received in the Duval County Public Schools. Ms. McClendon obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from Edward Waters College and retired from Florida State College (FCCJ) and The Duval County School Board as a Teacher.

Ms. McClendon accepted our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at an early age. She served him faithfully and set the foundation for her children and grandchildren. Ms. McClendon worked as a secretary for the Sunday school department and a member of the Adult Choir as well as the Senior Women Bible Class. She loved her Church family (Saint Matthew Baptist Church and Pastor George A. Price) and was faithful until her transitioning.

Ms. McClendon was a loving and caring person, but above all she was a praying woman who loved her children, grandchildren, and entire family. She was a supporter and active on God’s Power and Deliverance Ministries Prayer Line (Atlanta, Georgia). As a Financial Aid Director, Ms. McClendon directed and assisted so many students and enjoyed being a School Teacher and teaching students how to read. She loved old and new gospel music especially “Every Praise is to our God” and “Total Praise”. Her favorite singing song was “Blessed Assurance”. Ms. McClendon was a member of the Grand Masonic Lodge Order of Eastern Stars and many other school and community organizations.

After living a full and blessed spiritual life, on Thursday, April 30, 2020, she obtained her Angel Wings and answered “A Charge to keep I have and a God to glorify” “by entering into heaven’s gate” “Thy God and Faithful servant well done”.

Ms. McClendon was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted children, Sheri Michele McClendon of Jacksonville Florida, Bishop/Sergeant Derek La ‘Ray McClendon (Laleta) of Atlanta, Georgia; godson, James Robinson of Jacksonville Florida; brothers, Jerry Smith of Alexandria, Louisiana, Edward Kinnel of Dawson, Georgia, Tommie, William, and Gary Benton of Jacksonville, Florida; sister, Brenda Benton of Jacksonville, Florida; cousin, Morris Perry of Miami, Florida; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.


The funeral service for Betty Jo McClendon will be held 11:00 am Saturday, May 9th, 2020 at the Samuel C. Rogers Jr. Memorial Chapel 4315 N. Main Street Jacksonville, FL 32206. The visitation will be 4:00 - 6:00 pm, Friday, May 8th, 2020 at the Funerals by T.S. Warden 4315 North Main Street Jacksonville, FL 32206. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
