Brenda Aikens Walker was called to her rest on May 19, 2020. Born in Clovis, New Mexico, on March 6, 1964, her early life in a military family included living at the Royal Air Force in Mildenhall, England, Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, DC and Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Brenda attended elementary and junior high school in Yulee, FL. She was a member of the marching band, Beta Club and proud Hornet before coming to Fernandina Beach High School and becoming a Pirate. She graduated from FBHS in 1982, followed by earning degrees at Florida State University and later the University of Southern Mississippi. She taught Language Arts and Reading at FBHS, her alma mater, for over 25 years, encouraging students and later some of their children to recognize and realize their potential and gifts. Brenda’s support as sponsor was instrumental in the establishment of the Sigma Beta Club on campus. Her dedication to her profession, her diligence in the classroom and in extracurricular activities and commitment to building a well-rounded person were often recognized and she was selected 2001-2002 Teacher of the Year for FBHS.

Brenda married the love of her life Clarence Walker III in 1996. She was a loving wife and daughter, dedicated sister, loving “Nana”, delightful niece and cousin, and a loyal friend with a sweet spirit, warm smile and welcoming heart. After retirement she eagerly undertook the role as caregiver to her mother Barbara until her passing in 2019.

In addition to her loving husband of 23 years Clarence Walker III, she leaves to cherish her memory her father Johnny Aikens, Jr., brother John Aikens III (Gloria) of Aurora, CO; sisters Jerelynn Natasha Aikens (Brad) of Fernandina Beach, FL and Kimberly Diehl of Brooklyn, NY; mother-in-law Geraldine (Dolly) Walker; sisters and brother-in-law Angela Russell, Melissa Walker (Brian) and Damon Walker of Fernandina Beach, FL; aunts Sandra Palmer (Hosea) and Laura Rhodes of Yulee, FL, Eunice Williams of Daytona Beach, FL, Ellen Green of Nassauville, FL, Clarice Williams of Fernandina Beach, FL, Leila Akins of Jacksonville, FL, Regina Gilbert of Miami, FL and uncle Bruce Williams (Drena) of Capitol Heights, MD; nieces Ashley Cookes, Alyson Cookes, Alysha Aikens, Ayshia Russell, Alicia Russell and Jasmine Walker; nephews Jaedynn Aikens-Lee, Taj Aikens-Lee, Terrence Stewart (Natasha) and Justin Gilyard; godson Ryan and his children Juliette, Ryan Jr. and E’Layah; goddaughter Breanna Peterson and her son Tavarus Jr.; godbrother Jamaal Benjamin; special friends Gail Long, Debbie Milligan-Roland, Shirley Gates-Johnson and Bridgette C. Mention; and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Rest in Peace Brenda! I appreciate you for being the beautiful person you are! You were already an Angel. Since we met in homeroom at FBHS you always lifted me up and encouraged me. In February you told me you loved my positive presence in my community! I will take extra pride while hearing your voice and continue to work. Your soul has already done what it needed to do, so for now, I hope you can rest in peace!

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. As a district administrator with the Nassau County School District, I had the honor of knowing and working with Mrs. Aikens-Walker. She was a true professional and a blessing to her students and colleagues.
