Obituary for Cassandra R. Floyd

Cassandra "Sandra" Floyd was born to the late Edward "WD" and Eliza "Ms. Liza" Floyd in Fernandina Beach Florida. She was educated in the public schools of Nassau County, graduating from the newly desegregated Fernandina Beach High School, Class of 1972. Sandra moved to Washington, DC to make her mark on the world. She would ultimately spend the next 37 years there.

Sandra attended the University of the District of Columbia majoring in business. She was employed by the United States Postal Service for 36 years retiring in 2009. During her employment she held several positions from LSM operator, to Window clerk and Express Mail clerk.

Sandra had a love for gardening, health and nutrition, but most of all sewing and embroidery, which she was introduced to by her mother as a consolation for missing a Delfonics concert. Her talent and creativity was definitely God given.

When she had all the snow and ice she could handle, Sandra moved back to her beloved hometown of Fernandina. Following the passing of her mother, Sandra joined the Nassau County Sheriff's office as a crossing guard, stationed at Southside Elementary school. She absolutely loved her job and could be found buying treats for "her children" throughout the school year.

Sandra firmly believed in making a difference in the lives of others. To that end, she held various volunteer positions including mentor with Take Stock In Children and she was a Fernandina Beach Housing Authority board member. She was diligent and faithful in her work and service until her health began to fail.

On Wednesday, June 10, 2020 God declared that Cassandra's work on this side of eternity was done and she slept away peacefully in her home (Augustine Landing, Jacksonville, FL) .

Of all the things her life afforded her, she cherished the most, her titles of Mama: LaShonda Alderman; Gran-Gran: Kayla Alderman; Sister: Yvonne (Theodore) Brown, Laverne Floyd - Mitchell, Charles "Chuck" (Barbara) Floyd, Victor (Lillie) Russell, and Serena (Wayne) Peterson; An'Sandra: Donna (Ronnie) Dart, Shakira Thompson, Christopher Brown, LaTanya (Lucious) Sumlar, Marcus, Charmaine and Keri Floyd; and Auntie: 6 great-nieces and 4 great-nephews.

Loving memories will be shared amongst a host of extended family and friends including her DC crew, Richetta Campbell, Sara Moore, Carol Marbury, Linda Price, and Carolyn Davis-Tally; her loving caretakers, Venice Stewart, Rosie Johnson and Christine Wilson; her mother figure,  Marilyn Harris; neighbor, Wanda Nixon; and dear friend, Ernestine Pollen.
