Charlie Lee Mills, Sr. was born in Jacksonville, Florida on January 8, 1928 to Lurania Jackson. He attended school in Jacksonville before dropping out at an early age to help care for his mother and sister. Known by his nickname “Lit”, he grew up in the Sweetwater, Wesconnett, and New Town areas of Jacksonville. Although he gave his life to Christ at an early age, at the time of his death, he was not affiliated with a church. However, during a visit with Rev. A retired Longshoreman, ILA Local 1408, Charlie also worked numerous other jobs including as a cab driver for the New Deal Cab Company. In years past, he was a popular dancer known from Ashley Street to American Beach. He loved planting fruit trees and flowers in his yard, playing checkers with his friends at a neighborhood service station, and fishing at various areas of the St. John’s River, especially Heckscher Drive.

Charlie met and married the love of his life, Catherine Easter Dixon in 1946. From this union was born five children: two sons, Charlie L. Mills, Jr. and Heawartha (Towanda) Mills; three daughters, Patricia L. Brinson Mills, Alfreda L. Williams, and Eva Jean Mills; and like a daughter, his niece, Shirley A. Myers Robinson.

Charlie Mills departed this life on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, and was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Mills; mother, Lurania Mills Myers; step-father, Lawrence Myers; and sister, Maggie Myers Harp.

At the time of his death, Charlie Mills was the patriarch of five generations. Along with his wife and children, he leaves behind his loving family and friends to cherish his memory; Sixteen grandchildren; twenty-four great great grandchildren; and nine great great great grandchildren.

Brothers-in-law, Napoleon (Jeanette) Filer and David “Leroy” (Lillian) Filer; sisters-in-law, Rutha M. Merricks, Bernice Folston (Willie), Lillian Mitchell (Albert), Judy Anderson, Patricia Jones (Edgar), Geraldine Blake, and Lue Ethel Chisolm;

I’m so sorry for your loss. May the God of all comfort help you during this difficult time. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4 & Psalms 83:18). Jesus prayed for God’s Kingdom to come because He knew it would be able to solve all mankind’s problems even death. (Revelation 21:4,5 & Daniel 2:44).
