Obituary for Charlie Emory Sledge

Charlie Emory Sledge was born on March 5, 1936 in Macon, Georgia to Charlie and Bernice Sledge. He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Hill on December 17, 1954. Soon after he enlisted in the United States Army (Korea), 3 years later they gave birth to the 1st of 3 daughters. Charlie obtained many service awards, metals and accolades. He was honorably discharge from the US Army.

Charlie obtained an Associate Degree from Edward Waters College. He faithful attended Dayspring Baptist Church as a little boy, under the leadership of Pastor C. Weaver. He was a Duval County Correctional Officer for over 36 years and received many service awards and honors. Charlie departed this life on Monday, December 31, 2018.

Charlie leaves behind a faithful and loving family wife of 64 years, Betty Sledge; three daughters, Charlotte Harris Sledge, Elouise Ellis and Carmelia Portee; son-in-law, Willis Ellis; sister, Bonnie Sledge; grandchildren, Carl Nesmith, Jerrand Nesmith, Tiffany Nesmith, Joshua Nesmith, Shiffon Holmes, Brandie Jackson, Aundra Harris, Antwan Ellis, James Ellis, John Portee, Jr., Seqouyah Portee; nephew, Rickey Sledge; and a large host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; Charlie also leaves behind his favorite and only sister-in-law, Matty Jefferson and niece, Beverly Gowder who played a pivotal part of his life; a loving and close member of the family, John Portee, Sr.

The funeral service for Charlie Emory Sledge will be held 11:00 am Thursday, January 10th, 2019 at the Dayspring Baptist Church 5654 Dunn Ave Jacksonville, Florida 32218. The visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 pm, Wednesday, January 9th, 2019 at the Funerals By T. S. Warden 4315 North Main Street Jacksonville, FL 32206. Interment in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
