Obituary

Obituary for Coretta Dawn Carter (Pelsey)

Coretta Pelsey Carter, affectionately known as “Dawn”, was born on July 18, 1974 to the late Gracie Lee Pelsey in Jacksonville, FL. She accepted Christ in 1982 and became a member of New Redeem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. E. I. Norman, where she was baptized, participated in various activities with the youth department, and served faithfully on Usher Board #3. She later joined Bethel Baptist Institutional Church under the leadership of Pastor Emeritus Rudolph McKissick Sr. and Bishop Rudolph McKissick Jr., where she was a member of the church choir and the choral group, Meachum Clark and Company.

Coretta attended the local schools in Duval County graduating from Jean Ribault Sr. High School, Class of 1992. She was a member of the “Marching 200” Trojan band, playing alto saxophone, and was a member of the Flag Corps under the direction of Mr. Clifford M. Buggs.

She worked in the mortgage industry for over 20 years and, at the time of her demise, was employed at Fairway mortgage as a manager of the Mortgage Processing department.

Coretta loved to laugh, dance, sing praises to the Lord, and she did it all with style from head to toe. Until the time of her death, she remained an independent woman who cared for and loved her sons, family, and friends.

Coretta departed this life on Friday, July 10, 2020 after hearing the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto me and rest”. She leaves to cherish her memories: sons, Rejenald Fullwood and Carrick Carter; siblings, Cheryl Griffin (Herman) (Aurora, CO), Katherine Youngblood (Kevin), Willie Pelsey Jr., Tangier Perinet (McKinney, TX), Keith Pelsey (Stone Mountain, GA), and Kevin Pelsey (Nancy); nieces, Sharntel Middlebrooks, Cynthia Coon (Chad) (Aurora, CO), and Tieranie Johnson; nephews, Terry Pelsey Jr., Nathan Griffin (Aurora, CO), Keith Kearney-Pelsey (Stone Mountain, GA), and Anthony Johnson; eight great-nieces; three great-nephews; one great-grand niece; two great-grand nephews; and a host of cousins and dedicated friends among them are Fania Carson and Michelle Grant.

Girl I am going to miss you. All we did was laugh! In the choir loft when a 'subject' came into our view, we would exchange glances and get to giggling. I am in tears thinking about the good times that we shared. The other day I wanted to text you to tell you about something and remembered that you were in a better place. That hurt so bad and I sobbed for a while. We met because of Carrick when he was 3 or 4 years old. We had never met but were sitting next to each other in choir rehearsal and Carrick was crying because you wouldn't allow him to play with the hymnals. He jumped into my lap and made me hold him. While I was rocking him we introduced ourselves. From there the laughter began. The ladies get to-gethers were a blast! You will be missed Coretta! And to the family I offer my deepest condolences. I will keep her sons in my thoughts and prayers as well as the rest of the family. Rest well my classy, stylish unforgettable friend. I love you, Tam
