Obituary for Cornelius Gilchrist Funches Jr.

Mr. Cornelius Gilchrist Funches, Jr., lovingly known as “Cook”, was born on November 20, 1942 in Jacksonville, Florida to Cornelius Mack Funches, Sr. and Mrs. Ozie Bell Funches. He received a formal education in the school system of Jacksonville and learned masonry skills from his father who was a contractor. A graduate of Stanton Preparatory School where he was awarded a full scholarship to college, Cornelius decided to join the United State Army in 1961 where he served three years. After his military tour ended, he returned to Jacksonville.

Cornelius was very skillful and worked at the following companies: Firestone Tire Company, Criswell Tire Company, B & B Exterminating, and Anchor Hawkins Company. Cook worked and retired from Kaiser Aluminum/National Car Company after 30 years of service. After retirement, he worked as a bus driver for M.C. Harris, First Student, and Durham Bus Services.

Cornelius enjoyed fishing, collecting trains, and was always curious about how things worked. He loved to watch sports and TV westerns. The true love of his life was Ms. Betty Ann Jones, who he met and married on May 30, 1970. They remained together 56 years until his passing.

Cornelius was predeceased by his parents, Mr. Cornelius Mack Funches, Sr., and Mrs. Ozie Bell Funches; sisters, Ernestine Funches and Barbara Griffin; brothers, David, Randolph, and Mack. This devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2020.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving wife of 50 years, Mrs. Betty A. Funches; son, Terry Funches; daughters, Ms. Regina Farley and Ms. Katrina Williams; grandchildren, Mr. Darrin Le’Sean Funches, Doneka Williams (Gary), Willie Gilbert, Jr. (Danielle), and Dometria Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Ke’Arie, DJ, Kelieyah, Khelani’, Isaiah, and Giovanni’; sisters, Voncile Smith (Bernard) and Delores Stanberry; sister-in-law, Mrs. Harriette Funches; godson, Mr. Cedric Mitchell; a host of nieces; amongst them Ms. Lurile “Lee” Mansfield and Laquanta “June” Jones; nephews, Anthony Richardson (Shannice); cousins, numerous relatives, and many sorrowing friends, including his long-time friend, Ms. Patricia Taylor.

The funeral service for Cornelius Gilchrist Funches, Jr. will be held 12:30 pm Saturday, August 15th, 2020 at the Church of Christ At US Hwy 1 6452 New Kings Road Jacksonville, FL 32219. The visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 pm, Friday, August 14th, 2020 at the Funerals by T.S. Warden 4315 North Main Street Jacksonville, FL 32206. Interment in Edgewood Cemetery.
