Obituary for Debra Ann Simpkins (Johnson)

Debra A. Johnson Simpkins affectionately known as Lil Debbie, Bubba, Kizzy, and Ms. Debbie Cakes, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 7, 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida. She passed on peacefully from this life after a gradual decline in health.

Debra was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, born on December 31, 1954 to George T. Johnson and Dorothy Stewart Johnson, who preceded her. Debra moved to Jacksonville, FL in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. She found a friend in Paul Simpkins and the two were united in Holy Matrimony.

Debra attended J.W. Johnson Elementary, Alfred C. Priestley, JH, and Alcee Fortier HS in New Orleans. She did a brief stint in the U.S. Army. Debra was employed at Louis Armstrong Airport as a security checker, later as a TSA manager, later retiring from Cintas Uniform Services.

Debra attended Greater St. John M.B.C. from youth, she later accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized and became a member of Holy St. Matthews Baptist Church in New Orleans, LA. She would visit with family at Deland Missionary Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL.

Debra had many talents, singing, cooking, a flair for design, and a joyous spirit. She was a member of Fabulous J. Social and Pleasure Club, and Honorary member of the Liberated Mom Squad Social and Pleasure Club.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Paul Simpkins, two sons Reginald and Dionisio Johnson, and one daughter Ernestine Simpkins, Godson Malcol’m Bridgewater Jacksonville, FL; two brothers Joseph Ward, George Ronald Johnson (Deborah) three sisters, Dale Mathieu (Berman/Butch) New Orleans, LA; Diann Wilson (Min. Charles), Dorothy Mae Fisher Jacksonville, FL. One Aunt remaining, Shirley Dennis; Nieces: Tiffany (Henry), Kimberly (Kevin), Roquita, Trenelle, Arielle, Chris, Catrice, Brook, Artamia; Nephews: Lamoine (Charlene), Delery (Shirffa), Keith, Kendric (Tamika), Joseph/Peady (Pat), Tyrone (Karen), Ernest, and a host of great nieces and nephews. She always sent a birthday shout-out on Facebook to them. Special mention to honorary son, Willie, and lifelong friends Wendy, Katie, and Joyce. When neighbors heard of her passing the street and yards were filled with people seeing her off. Not a dry eye could be seen in women or men. Debra had a love of God, for all her family, friends, and neighbors. Well Done Soldier!
