Obituary for Dorothy Jean Simmons

Dorothy Jean Clay Simmons

On Monday, September 13, 1943, under the lights of candles (due to an executive order issued during World War II, for no electrical light be turned on) God allowed one of his angles to leave heaven and to be born in Nassau County Fernandina Beach, Florida. The parents of this special child, was the late Eloise Clinch Clay Gibbs and the late Thomas Alberta.

Dorothy attended public school and graduated from Peck High School in 1961. Later in life, she continued her education by earning an Associate Degree in Office Systems Technology from Florida Community College of Jacksonville.

Dorothy was the wife of Joseph Simmons, Jr. (1962-1985), and to that union, two daughters and three sons were given. She excelled at being a wonderful mother and homemaker. Dorothy was an excellent cook, baker, and seamstress. She always had a desire to enter the workforce and was employed at Amelia Island Care Center as the Assistant Administrator for many years. She retired from Cathedral Gerontology Center in Jacksonville, Florida around 2005.

Dorothy loved the Lord, and during her last days, she quoted these words, “All my life I have given God praise….” Over the years she was a member of several churches with the final church being Spirit of Truth Deliverance Ministry, Jacksonville Florida. Dorothy served in many roles in the church such as, girls club coordinator, choir member, ladies ministry and the mother of the church.

On Saturday, July 13, 2019, God made a roll call and peacefully with her children at her side, Dorothy answered the call and left this earthly home.
