Obituary for Ida Mae Armstead

Sis. Ida, daughter of the late Charlie and Sarah Brown Ferguson was born on November 5, 1922, in Quincy, Florida.  She was educated in the public schools of Gadsden County.  Ida was baptized at an early age and joined their family church, Bear Creek Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She later moved to Jacksonville, Florida and was united in holy matrimony to the late Alton Armstead on September 13, 1945.  They were married for 52 years until her husband’s untimely death on April 1, 1997.

Sis. Ida resided in Jacksonville, Florida for over 74 years, where she held membership with St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and later moved her membership to West Union Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor A. F. Cummings, Pastor S. Washington and Pastor Leroy Kelly where she served faithfully. Ida worked in Sunday School and on the Usher Board.  She was an avid Seamstress and sewed for not only her family, but for many churches, neighbors, and friends.  Once her children were of age she then sought employment outside of the home with the City of Jacksonville and the Duval County School Board until retirement in 1986.  Ida was a kind and loving Woman of God who also enjoyed working in her yard growing various flowers and vegetables, being a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, neighbor and friend.

On February 4, 2019, an angel from Heaven came to take Sis. Ida Mae Armstead to her home in glory, where she could rest from her labor.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Alton Armstead; daughter, Bessie; son, Charles; siblings, Tiness, Ruby and David.  She was the last child of the Ferguson’s in her generation.

Sis. Ida leaves to cherish her precious memories, loving and devoted daughters, Jacquelyn A. Coleman (Raymond L.) and Teresa A.
