Jaxen Cornell Mathis, (also known as Jack-Jack) our beloved champion was born to Rowenda Mathis, and Robert Allen Jr. on September 8th 2015. Jaxen's arrival into this world was, and will always be their greatest blessing. At an early age Jaxen was known to be inquisitive, funny, and full of light. His smile brightened up any room he entered while his laughter filled every heart he touched. Jaxen excelled academically, impressing his teachers and family members alike with his sass and wit.
He was a boy's boy. He enjoyed many exciting adventures from going to theme parks, zoo's, aquariums, and museums. To a typical day of just catching bugs, swimming, and attending the occasional Monster Jam. Jaxen was quite fond of wrestling and horse playing as well. He would occasionally give his famous phrase "I am gonna bust you up!" While holding a fist. This would be his warning to any opponent that may have underestimated his strength and skill. This display, of a playful heart and adventurous spirit captivated us all.
On May 19th 2019 Jaxen was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. With a less than 1 % survival rate. Upon discovery of the tumor, he immediately began treatments of radiation, chemo, and Immunotherapy. With a team of skilled physicians, loving family, encouraging friends and the lord's unwavering hand, Jaxen endured 2 years of treatment. Cruising in every day to his theme song 'Upside-down' with his thumbs up, and a smile on his face. He surpassed his original prognosis by nearly a year and a half. Jaxen, Rowenda, and his grandmother endured many challenges during a time of such uncertainty, but they kept their faith and never gave up.
Despite the many physical alterations that took place due his treatments. Inside his mind and heart remained the same. He still enjoyed his dog Bentley, went on regular outings, attended school, and even completed a full season of baseball. Never complaining, or feeling down. Jack-Jack's tenacious energy never changed.
In true Jaxen fashion he was a fighter until the very end.
On the morning of May 30th 2021 our heavenly father called Jaxen home. He is survived by his loving parents Robert Allen Jr. and Rowenda Mathis. Grandparents Jonathan Mathis, and Sharon Small. Aunt's Carla Mathis-Jones (Ray Jones), Jahmillah St Paul Popo (Eduardo St Paul Popo), Tamekah Ashley (Earl Ashley), Uncle Messai Small, and host of cousins, loving family and friends.
Though he was young in age, it is evident that his spirit and willpower was anything but young. His resilience, and determination coupled with passion and a heart of gold proved that Jaxen was truly a young man ahead of his time. He ignited something in all of us. He taught us to keep on fighting, to never give up, to love and live with all of our might no matter what may come your way. Our beloved Jack-Jack endured more in his short time here than most should ever experience, however his soul will carry on and continue to touch the lives of many, for generations to come.
