Obituary for Jessie Pearl Scott (Turner)

Jessie Pearl Turner was born on January 12, 1952, to Elmore and Lucy Turner, in Fernandina Beach, FL. She was the 6th of eight children. Jessie transitioned from this life on Sunday, December 11, 2022. She was 70 years old.

Jessie married Willie Lee Scott in 1979. To that union, three children were born: Quiana, Darren, and Darryl.

Jessie recognized her calling to teach on her very first day of school. She returned home that day and told her mom she wanted to be a teacher. From that day forward, her love for school and her desire to educate never faltered or wavered. Jessie graduated from Fernandina Beach High in 1970 with honors, as a member of the National Honor Society. She became a teacher after graduating Summa Cum Laude from Bethune Cookman College in 1974 with a degree in United States history.

Throughout her career, she accomplished many things. Jessie was the first Black “Teacher of the Year” at Callahan Middle School. She won several Golden Apple awards for being an outstanding teacher and she received recognition in the Callahan newspaper for her accomplishments over the years. Jessie was indeed called by God to teach. Even after retiring from the Nassau County School System in 2011, she never stopped giving words of wisdom to everyone around her.

She confessed Christ in 1968 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach, FL. Anyone who knows her, knows that Jessie truly loved the Lord. She couldn’t say enough about the goodness of God. She was a strong woman of God who never complained no matter how difficult the situation may have been. She would simply start singing, “You Are My Strength” and find a way to endure.

Jessie was a dedicated church member for many years. She participated in several ministries throughout her life. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served as Superintendent of Sunday School, and served as Coordinator of Sunday Youth Enrichment at her church, Open Arms, for nearly 20 years.

Jessie was deeply devoted to her family. She was very proud of her three children, and her grandchildren were the light of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Grace Dinkins and Eddie Turner. She is survived by her children, Quiana Scott, Darren Scott, and Darryl Scott; her grandchildren, Torrence Bonsell and Jessica Kohn; siblings, Lois Turner, Otheller Turner, Charlie (Ollie) Turner, Rutha Jones, and Janessa (Leon) Grant; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who can all rejoice because Jessie Pearl Turner Scott, a good and faithful servant of the Lord, had a life well lived.
