Obituary for Jo Ann Ulmer

Jo Ann Anderson-Ulmer was born in St. Augustine, FL on September 29, 1946 to the late Mr. And Mrs. Hurley Anderson Sr. She attended local schools in St. John's County School District. JoAnn participated in softball and ran track for Richard J Murray High School. After Graduating from Richard J. Murray High School JoAnn decided to further her education and attended Edward Waters College where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education.

Jo Ann embarked on a journey that none of us will ever forget because it’s what she believed in along with three other brave soldiers. In 1963 Jo Ann, Willie Carl Singleton, Audrey Neil Edwards and Samuel White decided to inspire the world. They did so by taking a trip to the Woolworth Department store in St. Augustine, FL where they decided to sit down at the lunch counter to have lunch. They asked for a hamburger, coke and fries it was then that they were met with opposition. They were told that N******s were not welcomed nor served at Woolworth. From that point on St. Augustine became the hot spot in the south for racism and Civil rights and because of this St. Augustine received national attention, out of this the St. Augustine four were born. Thank god for their parents for standing strong and allowing them to participate in the many protests in downtown St. Augustine. Hats off to Dr. Hayling for standing in the gap for the St. Augustine Four because without him none of this would have been possible. The civil Rights movement in St. Augustine allowed many to gather at local churches to rally for what they believed was right. Jo Ann, Willie Carl Singleton, Audrey Neil Edwards and Samuel White experienced some things in life that they will never forget. So today, we are here to honor Jo Ann Anderson Ulmer for her courageous fight and participation in the St. Augustine Civil Rights Movement.

Jo Ann Anderson Ulmer was married to William C. Ulmer for 35 years. To this union 3 children were born; she built a storied legacy of friends and family.

Accepting Christ into her life at an early age. She was a faithful servant at Zion Missionary Baptist Church. JoAnn moved to Jacksonville, FL and joined Christian Fellowship Baptist Church where she was a dedicated usher and board member until her health failed her. JoAnn worked for the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind until retiring in 2008 serving 33 years as a Senior Residential Instructor. Jo Ann returned to Florida School for the Deaf and Blind for an additional 12 years working on the weekend as a weekend Chaperone. She will be missed by her loving family and friends.
