Obituary for Johnnie Mae Ward

Johnnie Mae Ward was born on Friday, October 4, 1929 in Mobile, Alabama to Alex and Maebelle Meriweather. She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized. She later met and married Willie J. Ward.

Johnnie Mae was a Deaconess at Greater Macedonia Baptist Church She was also the first Black School Crossing Guard on the Eastside of Jacksonville and was a member of the Rosebud Ladies. Johnnie Mae loved children and enjoyed spending time with them. For many years, she was a Girl Scout Leader.

Johnnie Mae departed this life on Tuesday, January 28, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Lela Canthy.

She leaves to cherish her memories her children: devoted full-time caretaker, Iris L. Sykes and husband, Paul, Carol Simpson, Paulette Gamble, Paul Simpson, Cecil Simpson, and Maybelle Butler; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; a grand niece; a grand nephew; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral service for Johnnie Mae Ward will be held 12:00 pm Friday, February 7th, 2020 at the Greater Macedonia Baptist Church 1880 Edgewood Ave West, Jacksonville, FL 32209. The visitation will be 4 - 6pm, Thursday, February 6th, 2020 at the Funerals by T.S. Warden 4315 North Main Street Jacksonville, FL 32206. Interment in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
