Obituary for Joseph (Joe) "Joe" Garvin

Deacon Joseph Garvin, affectionately called Joe, was born on March 12, 1934, in Allendale, South Carolina to the late Mr. Ollie & Mrs. Essie Lee Sanders Garvin. He was one of eight children born to this union; three brothers: Ollie Garvin, Jr., Fred Garvin, and Rev. Alex Garvin; four sisters: Lula Mae Garvin, Marie Hildreth, Mary Smith, and Helen Garvin Garrison. He attended school in Allendale, SC.

He later moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he lived for 50 years. Later, he moved to Callahan, FL.

Deacon Garvin worked at the Greyhound Line South for 30 years until retirement. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Good Shepherd Baptist Church, in Jacksonville, FL. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board under the leadership of the Late Rev. Alex Garvin. After the death of Pastor Garvin, he continued to serve as Chairman of the Board at New Good Shepherd under the new leadership of Rev. Carl Williams until his health failed.

Preceded him in death are his parents, Ollie and Essie Garvin; three brothers, Ollie, Fred, and Rev. Alex Garvin; two sisters, Lula Garvin and Helen Garrison; and two sons, Joe Garvin and Michael Garvin.

He had a short stay at the Jacksonville Nursing and Rehab Center, UF Health Jacksonville, and Jacksonville Health Care, where he answered his Master’s call on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.

Deacon Garvin leaves to remember and cherish his memories, a son, Elder Larry (Carolyn) Garvin, Sr.; a daughter, Annette (Elder Keith) Morrell; a step-daughter, Wanda Bowman; two grandsons, Larry Garvin, Jr and Jonathan (Dynasia) Garvin, U.S. Army; five granddaughters, Lady Dawn (Pastor Ken) Thompson, Kristine Gray, Renada (Larry) McCoggle, Latoya (Fletcher) Chapman, and Billie Jean Crittendon;13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Hildreth and Mary Smith; one sister-in-law, Gussie Garvin; special friend, Willie B. Garvin; caretaker, Jackie Robinson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many sorrowing friends.
