Obituary

Deacon Joseph Pickett, Sr., affectionately known as “Joe P.” and “Uncle Joe”, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Eva Pickett in Jacksonville, Florida on October 12, 1943. He was educated in Duval Public Schools and proudly celebrated with Matthew Gilbert High School’s, Class of 1962.

For over 52 years, he excelled in logistics and transportation. Within those years, he served as plant manager at Southeastern Metals under the management of longtime friend, Nadine Grambling. He also traveled all over the United States as a master driver of 18-wheeler semi-trailers. He could be seen on the road with a smile, map, and faithful guide… “Owner Jesus Christ; Operator Joseph Pickett Sr.” He was very friendly, loved, and admired by everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Eva Pickett; sister, Jimmie Lee Morrison (Marion); and brothers, Eugene and Lawrence Pickett.

On June 5, 2020 at 6:00pm, Joe P. accepted God’s sovereign call. The Lord called him to his final rest from days of sickness and pain. He closed his eyes with a small breath and smile.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 58 blessed years, Doretha Laurine Gelsey Pickett; Children: devoted daughter, Doretha Linnell Pickett; devoted son, Joseph Pickett (Alisia); goddaughter, Marilyn Byron (Tim); niece, Sandra Green; nephew, Terrald Marshall; Granddaughters: Datisha “Tiki”, Danerica Hardmon (Byron), Daqueasha, Sable, Joneasha, A’Maya, Ja’Naya, Alexia, Deja; Grandsons: Robert Wright (Jessica), Brian; Great Grandchildren: Caleb, Ohmad, Christian, Orien, Chloe, Bryson, Cadence, Josiah, Jaycie; Siblings: Eva Tolbert (Ben), Julius Henderson (Brenda); Devoted Brothers-in-law: Lamar & Elijah (Jackie) Gelsey, Aaron Jacobs (Diane), Walter Harris; Devoted friends: Willie Nathan (Pearlie), Roger White (Jewell), Sam Reddick (Beverly), Louis Council (Yvette); Godchildren: Terrance, Marcus, Marnisha, Marsha, Patricia, Julia, Courtney, Tameka, Monica, Teresa, Dana, Rene, Jasmine, Gary (Lisa), Dorothy, Big Mike; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many sorrowing friends.
