Obituary for Josie Verlencia Spicer (Simms)

Mrs. Josie Verlencia Simms Spicer was born November 27, 1930, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Allison Rhysworth and Estalla Ruth Simms. Mrs. Spicer attended the local Duval County Public Schools, graduating from Stanton High School in 1948. She then went on to Edward Waters College, where she received her AA degree and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial College (Florida Memorial University) in St. Augustine, Florida.

Mrs. Spicer pursued her passion in education enlightening the minds of numerous students within Duval County. Her teaching career led her to various schools such as Jacksonville Beach Elementary, Carter G. Woodson Elementary, and Highland Elementary as an educator in the Duval County Public School District, until her retirement after 34 years of dedicated service. As a proud and devoted member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Mrs. Spicer was baptized by Rev. Hurley and served on the United Methodist Women’s Board, the Prayer Line Warrior and the Ebenezer Hospitality Committee for many years. In her spare time, Mrs. Spicer was a creative crafter, avid bowler, skillful fisher(wo)man, traveler, and a member of various organizations such as the Duval County Retired Teachers and Duval Teachers United.

In his infinite wisdom, God called Mrs. Spicer to eternal rest, Sunday, February 14, 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida. Her loving husband of 59 years, Mr. Hercules Spicer, is left to cherish her memories along with her daughter, Centralia Spicer Carey; grandchildren, Tamira Carey and Amel Carey; nieces, Voncielle Griggs, Veda Stukes, Jennifer Kennedy, Beverly Spicer, and Patricia Spicer; nephew, Gregory Spicer; cousins, Gloria Anderson (Valdosta, GA), Rosa Brennon (Darin, GA) Verlon Ward (Donna) (Miramar, FL), Dana Shropshire (Dennis); longtime childhood friends, Margaret Wynn, Geraldine Foster and Betty Emanuel; a host of grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and nephews, great great-grandnieces and nephews; along with loving relatives and friends.

The funeral service for Josie Verlencia Spicer will be held 12:00 pm Saturday, February 27th, 2021 at the Samuel C. Rogers Jr. Memorial Chapel, 4315 North Main Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32209. The visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 pm , Friday, February 26th, 2021 at the Funerals by T.S. Warden, 4315 North Main Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
