Obituary for Lois DeVaughn

Lois Jones-DeVaughn was born August 22, 1941 in Alachua, Florida. The 12th of 13 children, Lois was raised in Lake Butler, Florida by her sharecropper parents, Deacon Doris and Zola (Hedgeman) Jones. The family was active members of Hopewell AME Church. Lois attended Lake Butler Consolidated High School and served in numerous roles; she was a majorette and selected salutatorian of the Lake Butler Consolidated High School, Class of 1959.

Upon graduating from high school, Lois moved to Jacksonville, Florida and shortly afterwards, she met and married her late husband, James L. DeVaughn, who preceded her in death in 1971. After her husband’s untimely death in 1971, Lois remained a widow while successfully raising their four (4) children. Lois served over 31 years in the food service industry for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office until she retired on September 30, 2017. On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, Lois was called to rest after a lengthy illness.

Lois, a strong woman who did not spare the rod instilled Godly principles, morals and values in her children and grandchildren. She had a contagious laugh and warm and welcoming smile. Lois was a master at conquering advanced crossword puzzles and loved her family and friends. She’d often entertain them with her infectious sense of humor (A Family Trait).

Lois was added to the body of Christ and became a member of Northside Church of Christ in the early 1990’s where she attended church.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, James Lloyd DeVaughn – 1971; youngest son, Dexter Lloyd DeVaughn – 1995; her son-in-law, Samuel R. McCoy, Jr. – 2000; and her daughter-in-law, Octavia Madison-DeVaughn - 2011.

Lois (Jones) DeVaughn leaves her life’s legacy behind to be celebrated by: her children: Rosa Lee DeVaughn, Tracy McCoy and Tillis Q. DeVaughn; siblings: Dorothy Stewart, Queen Esther Solomon and Oliver Jones Sr. grandchildren: Allen DeVaughn, Sr., Tiana Adams (Jonathan), Samuel R. McCoy III, Anthony Sanders, James McCoy, Tillisa DeVaughn, Morgan McCoy, Cameron Domino, Darrius Partridge and Bethany McCoy; 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of very close cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
