Obituary for Lucille Quarles

Mrs. Lucille Shepard Quarles, affectionately known as “Cille,” transitioned from this earthly life on Monday, May 24, 2021.

One of five children, Lucille was born to the late Charlie and Ruth Shepard on June 27, 1945 in Jacksonville, Florida. Lucille accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful long-time member of First Baptist Church of Oakland, where she served on the VIP Ministry.

Education was a priority for Lucille. She was a proud graduate of Douglas Anderson High School, Class of 1963. She furthered her studies to become a Licensed Cosmetologist and Interior Design Consultant. As a result, she developed long-lasting friendships and took great pride in utilizing her talents to make others happy. However, her greatest joy was being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

On December 16, 1964, Lucille married the love of her life Claude Quarles Jr. and their undying love grew even stronger during their 56 years of marriage. During Claude’s 30-year career in the United States Navy they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Crystal and Cheryl. Cheryl and husband Edward, provided Lucille with an adoring granddaughter, Adara Alexandria. Lucille made a lasting impression on her girls. She was compassionate, nurturing, and their best friend in life.

Lucille was a servant at heart and spent many hours helping those in need. Many friends and loved ones share stories of how she has provided guidance and support over the years. She exemplified the precepts of the word servant. After a lifetime of generosity, she is now a servant of the Lord.

Lucille was preceded in death by her father, mother, two brothers: Charles Shepard and Perry Shepard, and sister, Ruth Ann Lockett.

She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted husband of 56 years, Claude Quarles Jr.; two loving daughters, Crystal Quarles and Cheryl Quarles-Gaston (Edward); granddaughter, Adara Alexandria; brother, William Shepard, Panama City, FL; sisters-in-law: Evelyn Shepard, Othella McMillion, Indianapolis, IN, and Kathy McGee (Michael), Charlotte, NC; special family friends: Beverly Fields, Gloria Sessoms, Patricia Eason, Shirley Pugh, and Bette Jones; goddaughter, Kecia Johnson; godson, Rashaud Sessoms; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends to cherish her memories.
