Obituary for Marcellus Daniel "Big Moe" Holmes III

Marcellus Daniel Holmes, III, affectionately known as “Big Moe” and “Coach Holmes”, was born on July 4, 1974 to Darthula Miller (Leon) and the late Marcellus Daniels Holmes, Jr. Marcellus attended Paxon Senior High School and graduated in 1992.

Marcellus was awarded a scholarship to Savannah State University. He went on to become a National Football League player with the New England Patriots.

Marcellus worked at Daniel Memorial as a counselor. He also worked at Florida State College at Jacksonville as a GED teacher. While working as a football and track coach at Atlantic Coast High School, he later became a Mental Health Counselor. Marcellus loved children. He was an advocate for all of the students he taught and coached. His biggest achievement was being a mentor on and off the field and sending multiple athletes to college that he coached and mentored.

Marcellus was preceded in death by his father, Marcellus Daniel Holmes, Jr. and grandparents, Morris and Margaret Brooks. He is survived by his children, Marisa Holmes Sampson and Marcellus Daniel Holmes, IV; his loving and devoted mother and stepfather, Darthula and Leon Miller; sisters, Tracy Jones (Wilfried) and Erica Davis; special cousin, Percinia D. Lester; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephew, cousins, and friends.

The funeral service for Marcellus Daniel Holmes III "Big Moe" will be held 11:00 am Friday, July 10th, 2020 at the Trumpet In Zion Fellowship 6007 Seaboard Avenue Jacksonville, Florida 32244. The visitation will be 4:00 - 7:00 pm, Thursday, July 9th, 2020 at the Funerals by T.S. Warden 4315 North Main Street Jacksonville, FL 32206. Interment in Edgewood Cemetery.
