Obituary for Mary Griffin (Murray)
Mary Griffin, affectionately known as Mama G. was born on December 27, 1927 in Jacksonville, Florida to Chauncey Murray and Christine Turner. She was 1 of ten children. She was a devoted Christian, she loved her church and Pastor (WFBC) and she loved praising her Lord. She was the matriarch of the family. Mary would be singing her favorite song “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and her favorite saying was “I can’t complain” and “Not hurting anywhere”. She was known for giving the best hugs.
Mary received her AS and AA degrees, she also received a certificate of completion in Culinary Arts for cake decorating. Her cake designs were stellar. She worked at the Thunderbird for many years as a baker and also at the Independent Life building until she retired. Once she retired she became a foster grandparent working with pre-school children for the Northside Church of God in Christ. She loved teaching.
Mary transcended this life on March 12, 2022 at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Janice Mann and Rhonda Hudson; beloved twin sister, Miley Mitchell and 5 other sisters.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories: a daughter, Mary Mann-Reed; sons, John Griffin and Collis Griffin; grandchildren, Nanette Ford, Eric Hudson, Shateena Love (Brian), Kevin Griffin, Danny Jones, Brandon Jones, Xzavier Griffin, Erskin Townsend and Ernell Townsend; sisters, Christine Holloway and Gladys Dixon; brother, Rev. Isaac Murray; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, 7 godchildren, and many friends. She truly will be missed.
The funeral service for Mary Griffin will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26th, 2022 at the West Friendship Baptist Church, 945 Carrie Street, Jacksonville, FL 32209. The visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. , Friday, March 25th, 2022 at the Funerals by T.S. Warden, 4315 North Main Street, Jacksonville, FL 32206. Interment in Restlawn Cemeteries South.
