Obituary for Mary Ruth Nelson

Into the Eternal and Loving hands of God, Mrs. Mary Ruth Kittles Nelson returned home on Monday, September 16, 2019. She was born, February 15, 1926 in Lawtey, Florida to the late Rev. Charles Kittles and Mary Garner Kittles. She was one of 12 siblings. Mrs. Nelson attended Old Stanton High School and worked for Prudential Insurance Company where she retired. She was well noted for her culinary expertise and flare, she was recognized as an “Unsung Hero” by the Women’s Center of Jacksonville (Riverside).

Mrs. Nelson received numerous awards and recognitions in her lifetime. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and volunteered at the Health Department. She was also a lifelong volunteer for the Salvation Army and the Duval County Board of Elections; at her church, St. Paul AME, her service included the Pulpit Aid Board, Young at Heart Senior Ministry, Mass and Senior Choirs, Phyllis Wheatley Sunday School Class, the James L. Williams, Sr. Lay Organization, and a dedicated Class Leader. Her membership spanned over 70 years. She loved people and loved to serve. “Servant of God, Well Done!

Mrs. Nelson leaves a host of family members and friends to celebrate her life. Her devoted and last sister Rose Stokes, three daughters, Jeanette Kittles, Dr. Sharon Solomon (Kenneth) and Jacqueline Bryant. In her legacy, she also leaves five loving and devoted grandchildren, Shawn Martin (Derrick), Lynette Cato, Leonard Freeland Jr., Stephanie Freeland and Scott Freeland (Lisa); 17 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a multitude of nephews, nieces, cousins, loving friends, and church family.
