Obituary for Paul Steven Newman Sr.

Paul Steven Newman, Sr. was born in Jacksonville, Florida on September 15, 1940 to the late Theodore Roosevelt and Mabel Jackson Newman, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Theodore Jr., Clarence, Noah Henry, Curtis, Harry and Harold and sisters, Claudette, Jean and Jeanette.

Paul confessed Christ in his early teens, he was baptized by B.W. Williams at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. Later in life Paul, was one of the founders of Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Paul moved over to Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in 2020 and served as a Deacon until his health fail.

All of Paul’s education was obtained in the local school system of Duval County. After graduation, in 1959 Paul was drafted into the Army. Upon returning home, Paul was hired at Genuine Auto Parts (NAPA), his work ethics were unblemished, his mannerism was superb. He accomplished two promotions which no blacks had ever had in the NAPA company. After years of dedicated service, Paul had outgrown his relationship as an employee and felt the urge to merge into entrepreneurship. Newman’s Fuel Oil Service was organized and opened as a partnership–Mr. Theodore Newman, Jr. and Mr. Paul Newman’s venture began in 1968. The business flourished. As a progressive businessman, Paul always found time to help people. He became a profound community activist. His concerns, interests, and contributions were shared with his immediate surrounding neighborhood. His dreams were to help boys and girls find activities that would enable them to become respectable young men and women and also assist single parents. Paul was the Owner and Operator of Newman’s Exxon Station. In 1979, he opened Newman’s Fuel Oil and Gasoline Station so he could continue to serve the community. In 1982, another facet was instituted into the existing facility, Paul’s Food Mart and Catering Service. This new business grew rapidly and continue to grow. Paul later opened his own restaurant and catering service “Paul Home Style Food Service and Catering” until he retired.

Paul leaves to cherish his memories his beloved and devoted wife, Catina Newman; two sons; Paul S. Newman, Jr. and Journell Blain; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; two brothers: Rev. Dr. Cornelius (Gloria) and Kenneth; a loving sister, Vivian Turnbull; two brothers-in-law, Shedrick Corbin and Steven (Lois) Corbin; one sister-in-law, Debra (Jerry) Barker; Godchildren, Charles Brown, Jr., Robert Anderson, and Tyler and Tyree Frances; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.
