Obituary for Sonyja H. McKinley
Sonyja Deal Haith was the sixth child born to Carlacy and Arletha Haith. She was born on July 9, 1941 in Greensboro, NC. Sonyja met Charles Manuel McKinley in 1958, and after an extended courtship they married on November 30, 1963. They were married in Washington, DC. To this union two children were born, Michael and Pamela. Sonyja graduated from D.C. General School of Nursing. She worked diligently in her profession, loving and caring for others for 50+years before retiring. During her years of service at the hospital she was recognized with many outstanding awards.
Sonyja was a very gifted person. She was an excellent cook and a great baker and canner. She gifted many with her baked and canned goods. Her cakes, lemon lush pies, and zucchini breads were always a big treat. She enjoyed reconnecting with friends and family both old and new. Family meant a great deal to her - never forgetting birthdays, anniversaries and even the sick and shut-in. She was very active in the church, participating in the Women's ministries, the Usher Committee and the Care and Comfort Committee .
Sonyja departed this life on June 20, 2020 at her home in Orange Park, FL after a valiant battle with cancer. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles, seven sisters Ruth Latimer, Alice "Sis" Anderson, Gertrude Clarke, Delois Haith-Marsh , Mable Haith Stewart, Margaret Haith-Jordan and Colestia Barber and three brothers Carlacy Haith Jr., Reginald Linwood Haith, and Horace "Bunny" Bernard Haith. Sonyja leaves to rejoice in her memory her devoted children, Michael S. McKinley Sr. (Marianne) and Pamela McKinley; her grandchildren, Michael S. McKinley Jr., Krystal Graham (Stephen), Katrina McKinley, John Darion Griffith (Chasity), Jessica Raulerson, and Christopher Raulerson; four Great-granddaughters, Giana Graham, Amira Graham, Ziza Hall, and Rayleigh Baker; her siblings Ross (Elizabeth) Haith, Naomi Stewart; Anne Rico, and Earl (Salome) Haith. She also leaves behind a host of in -laws , nieces and nephews.
