Obituary for Thelma Hammond (Roberson)

Thelma Hammond, 73, of Jacksonville, Florida, was called to come home on December 30, 2019 with her family by her side. Born to Charlie and Maggie Roberson, July 12, 1946, in MacIntosh, Georgia. She was a woman with a noble heart. She had her schooling from Sophronia M. Tompkins High School in 1963 in Savannah, Georgia and had a BS degree from Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1987.

Thelma was a great endearing friend that never met a stranger and was always welcoming to everyone she met. She often invited those she met into her life, as well as into her home and were always friends. Thelma received her license in ministry and dedicated her extra time volunteering for adult education in St. Augustine, Florida and youth at her church and at assisted living centers or facilities. After retiring as an educator in elementary education, she volunteered in prison ministry in Fairfax, Virginia and single mothers’ outreach and other outreach ministries. Volunteering gave her great joy to serve in her church, she welcomed each visitor with open arms. For all the work she contributed to her community and her church, Thelma will be greatly missed.

Thelma is survived by her six children, Walter Alexander McClendon Jr., Natalie Fernette Wilcox, Andre Alexander McClendon, Marilyn Denise McClendon, Endolyn Renee McClendon-Brooks, James Dales McClendon, residing in Jacksonville, FL. She also is survived by seventeen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, five siblings, many nieces and nephews, and several extended family members.
