Obituary for Walter Alexander McClendon Jr.

On Thursday, August 20, 2020, Sgt. Walter Alexander McClendon, Jr., U.S. Army National Guard Ret., our loving brother, compassionately called Mac by friends, Alex by others, but just Walter by the family, was called home at age 56.

Walter was born on October 3, 1963, in St. Augustine, Florida, to Walter Alexander McClendon, Sr. and Thelma R. McClendon. He graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1983 and joined the Army National Guard of Florida in 1986, where he served twenty-seven years and retired in May 2013 at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center. His last work assignment was as a Maintenance Mechanic for the state of Florida, where he enjoyed working with a group of guys he considered and called his brothers. Although he never married or fathered children, his nieces, nephews, and friends’ children were like his own.

Walter had a passion for helping others and was a dedicated benevolent soul to all that needed him. He particularly enjoyed sharing his carpentry and mechanic skills and knowledge. He spent numerous weekends grilling with friends and enjoying their passion for remote control vehicles; he was an avid Florida State and Cowboy Football Fan and missed very few games. He was always there for his brothers and sisters to support them with tough love or to correct them with an infectious laugh, which made you laugh too. He will be missed intensely.

Walter was preceded in death by his father, Walter Sr., and his mother, Thelma. He is survived by his siblings, Natalie Wilcox, Andre McClendon, Marilyn McClendon, Endolyn Austin-Brooks, James McClendon, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
