Obituary for Dorothy Mae Morgan

Dorothy Mae Morgan
On Tuesday, March 24, 2015 God sent an angel to carry his faithful servant, Dorothy Mae Leggett Morgan home to glory. Dorothy Mae Leggett Morgan made her earthly debut in Wise County, Virginia on June 17, 1923. This “coal miner’s” daughter, who was the oldest of ten children, lived most of her childhood in the coal fields in Switchback, West Virginia. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School during her teenage years. She was educated in the McDowell County Public School System and graduated from Elkhorn Negro High School in 1942. Her parents moved the family to Bluefield, West Virginia in the early 1940’s. She married the late Robert Morgan in 1946 and resided in Bedford, Virginia for most of her adult life.

Dorothy was a 1985 Certified Nurse’s Assistant retiree, who had been employed by Bedford Memorial Hospital for over 20 years. Her former colleagues still affectionately refer to her as a “legend” and say “Dorothy Morgan was a God fearing woman and she was something else!”

For over forty years, Dorothy served faithfully in various ministries at Mount Zion Baptist Church, located in Bedford County as a Sunday School teacher, bible study teacher, usher board organizer, Deaconess, Church Mother, director of seasonal plays and productions and Church Treasurer. Prior to coming to Jacksonville, Dorothy was a member of Bethel AME Church , Bridgeport, CT, where she served on the Stewardess Board.

It was quite evident that Dorothy loved God, her church, friends and bible study. In addition to being a Deaconess, she faithfully and actively served on the Stewardess Board, in the Lay Organization, the Young at Heart and readily participated in the Phyllis Wheatley Church School Class at St. Paul A.M.E Church, Jacksonville, Florida.

Dorothy was also a member of the Red Hat Society, the Salvation Army Jacksonville Citadel, The Sheriff’s Advisory Council, the RSVP Committee and the neighborhood bible study at St. John’s Church. Additionally, Dorothy was a member of the bible study group and second floor captain at the Cathedral “Townhouse” Senior Residence.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her children, infant twins, her son, Robert Morgan, Jr.; two daughters, Erma Jean Morgan, Eileen Miller; her parents, Ernest and Mattie Leggett; two brothers, Ernest and Oscar Leggett; four sisters, Christine Leggett, Ruth Morrison, Irma Cabiness and Joy Jones.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Margaret (Bennie) English, Roanoke, Virginia, Starlet (Allen) Wilder, Jacksonville, Florida, Robin (Wilbur) Hall, Moneta, Virginia, Gwendolyn Daniels, Lindenwold, New Jersey; daughter-in-law, Maureen Morgan, New York City; son-in-law, Rev. John Avery Miller, Mechanicsville, Virginia; brother, Howard (Terrie) Leggett, Bluefield, West Virginia; two sisters, Shirley (Henry) Walker, Jacksonville, Florida, Joan (Claudius) Watts, Lake Wylie, South Carolina and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Dorothy’s life and Christian walk truly personified the lyrics of the song “May the Work I’ve Done, Speak for Me.”
