Obituary for Lawrence Norman Gaines Jr.

Lawrence Norman Gaines Jr.
Into paradise may the angels lead Lawrence Norman Gaines, Jr. who transcended from this life on Saturday morning, May 9, 2015. Lawrence was born on August 28, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Lawrence Norman Gaines, Sr., and Arlena D. Moore Gaines, both predeceased. Lawrence also had a sister, Doris Delores James-Butts, who is also predeceased.

After graduating from West Philadelphia High School in June 1965, Lawrence enlisted in the United States Air Force in February 1966. As he often jokingly reminded us, “I could have been a member of the ‘Temptations,’
but I chose to go off and serve my country.” While serving his country, Lawrence visited many countries and was intrigued by the different cultures, finally retiring March 1, 1986, after 20 plus years of dedicated service. We salute him! While stationed at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, DC, Lawrence found the love of his life, Essie Pearl Gaines, and they married on October 27, 1977. Though they divorced, they found their way back to each other and remarried on June 16, 2012, uniting our family for a second time. After Lawrence’s relocation to Jacksonville, Florida, he became a member of Westside Church of Christ, and enjoyed studying the Word of God, engaging in thought-provoking conversations about God and serving with the Men of Valor.

Lawrence also liked spending time with family, and watching and cheering on his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. He also enjoyed playing “Uno”, watching television dramas, crime shows and legal courtroom shows.

Lawrence leaves behind his wife, Essie Pearl Gaines; one daughter, Danèe C. Gaines Adams (Jeff); two step-daughters, Chantay R. Witcher and Renée M. Witcher; one step-son, Terrence Reaves (Deborah); one step-grandson, Carlos A. Reaves; one step-granddaughter, Kayla R. Brown; a niece, Donna Butts; and a host of loving family and friends.

The funeral service for Lawrence Norman Gaines, Jr. will be held 11AM, Thursday at the Westside Church of Christ 23 W. 8th Street. The visitation will be one hour before the service. Interment in Jacksonville National Cemetery. Please sign the family guest book and view the video tribute @ www.tswarden.com. Arrangements in care of Tyrone S. Warden, FDIC, 4315 N.
