“Big AL” Our Gentle Giant

Somebody please wake me up, and tell me
that this is just an illusion . . .

Two months ago I had an eerie dream
I saw a big white and gold trimmed coffin suspended in mid-air
by a device like a crane
I thought, how strange.
An Omen? A Vision? A premonition to prepare me for this day?
Can’t say.

Four and a half years ago, right here
I read a poem for our beloved mother
The late Hilda Mae Lizzmore, “Peaches”
Now Deja-vu, I pay homage to you
Junior, mom called you “June Bug”
I don’t know how to live without you
after having you for all of these years.
So instead of a pen with ink
These words are written with my own tears.

We were closer than close
though we lived over a thousand miles apart
But there’s no such thing as distance
Because we dwelled within one heart.

“Big AL”
Our Gentle Giant
Everyday like mischievous kids
we talked and giggled on the phone
A Gentle Giant, your booming voice
a deep Bass-Baritone.
As a teenager you were a caddy, retrieving Golf balls for the pros
Pumped gas at Joe’s filling station, A law abiding young man
trying to make a buck to help your family survive
You went from washing cars in your front yard, to owning a
detailing business. A hardworking, “up before the rooster’s crow”
Self made man.
A devout christian and genuine God lover
Passionately and religiously, read your Bible from cover to cover.
Devoted husband to margaret, your lifelong bride
When she was going for an operation, you called me and Boo-hoo cried.
A wonderful father, grandfather, uncle and everybody’s friend
So many memories of holiday celebrations
and the love we shared in the comfort of your den.

Now comes the flashbacks, and the raging storm inside
It’s gonna be a very lonely, agonizing roller-coaster ride.
After all of this is over, I’ll weep in solitude, all alone
But we’ll still talk, as always on a different kind of phone.
I had so much faith, so many plans for me and you.
Hopes and fervent prayers that God’s grace would see you through.

Time is impatient and in a hurry
Life comes with an expiration date.
Tomorrow may never come
Time has absolutely, no time to wait.
Imprisoned in a broken body, that didn’t allow your spirit to soar

Now you are free like the wind
Don’t have to suffer anymore
Missing you so much My Surrogate Father
My Brother, My Friend
Our special bond will never be broken
and God will reunite us again.
Say Hello to Mom and Dad
Give them all a Big Bear Hug
I can see her smiling face
Delighted to see her first born, “June Bug”
Big AL, Our Gentle Giant
There will never be another
like you, My Beloved Brother.
Now lay your head on God’s Chest and Just Rest...
