Sophrina Edith  McGarrah
Sophrina Edith McGarrah, affectionately known as “Mama Fronnie” was born on January 16, 1917 in Lakeland, Georgia to the late Acie Stroughter and Sarah Miller Stroughter. She attended the Public Schools in Lanier County graduating from high school.

On December 26, 1937, Sophrina married McKenzie McGarrah, Sr. in Berrien County, Georgia and they were married for 38 years. To their union, one son, McKenzie Jr. “Kent” was born. For many years, she worked as a housekeeper in the private sector of the Jacksonville community.

Sophrina was a longtime member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL when it was located in the Brooklyn neighborhood at the corner of Spruce and Dora Streets. Over the years, she attended many activities at Northside Church of Christ. In September 2007, she had a bible study and was baptized and added to the Church of Christ. She was committed in what she was able to do such as her weekly in-house worship, watching the Sunday morning telecast of “Let the Bible Speak”, and sending her offering. Sophrina was a faithful member of the Northside Church of Christ until the Lord called her home on Thursday, June 4, 2015.

Sophrina was preceded in death by her parents, Acie and Sarah Stroughter; her husband, McKenzie McGarrah, Sr.; grandson, McKenzie McGarrah, III; brothers, Otis Stroughter and Acie Stroughter, Jr.; sisters, Leila Mae Person, Carrie Meadows Carter, and Rebecca Haynes.

Sophrina leaves to cherish her loving memories her son, McKenzie McGarrah, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Althea V. McGarrah both of Savannah, GA; grandchildren, M’Shay J. McGarrah (Shawn Davis), Mya J. McGarrah, Niya J. McGarrah, and Xavier Q. McGarrah all of Savannah, GA; sister-in-law, Leola Stroughter of Jacksonville, FL; niece, Jeanette Hall of Jacksonville, FL; nephews, Charles Carter (Catherine) of Valdosta, GA, Acie Stroughter, III (Sandra), Reginald Stroughter, Ronald Stroughter (Calromea) all of Jacksonville, FL, and Bertram Stroughter of Denver, CO; special daughters/caregivers, Shirley Jones and Janette Jackson; special family friends, Louis and Poncianna Jackson and family; goddaughter, Belinda Jackson Warden (Tyrone); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The chapel service for Sophrina Edith McGarrah will be held 11AM, Friday at the Samuel C. Rogers Jr. Memorial Chapel 4315 N. Main Street. The visitation will be 5-7PM, Thursday at the mortuary.
