Obituary for Begonia Gilliard Collier
Begonia Gilliard Collier was born on September 25, 1944 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Begonia, affectionately called “Bea” by her family and friends was the oldest child to Mr. Lee Gilliard and Mrs. Beatrice Reid Gilliard. Begonia was a 1962 graduate of Northwestern High School where she was a majorette. She attended Xavier University and later graduated from Edward Waters College, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in History.
Begonia married the late Ervin T. Collier, Sr. in August of 1965 and from this union three children were born; Traci, Robin, and Ervin, Jr.
Begonia was a faithful member of the Church of Crucifixion Catholic Church, where she was a member of the choir. She was a member of Epicurean II social club for over 30 years and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Begonia was an educator at Jean Ribault Middle School and retired from the Duval County Public School System in 2012, after 30 years of service. She also enjoyed reading, cooking, crafting, spending time with family, and traveling.
Begonia departed this life on Friday, February 12, 2016. She was preceded in death by her father, Lee Gilliard; husband, Ervin T. Collier, Sr.
Begonia is survived by her children, Traci Collier Spellers, Robin Collier Hill, and Ervin T. Collier, Jr. (Jennifer Beale-Collier); mother, Beatrice Gilliard; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren; siblings, Jackie Rosier (Alcindor), Clara Stuart (Robert), Veronica Baker (Gregory), and Michael Gilliard; many loving nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Mass for Mrs. Begonia Gilliard Collier, will be celebrated 11AM, Thursday February 18th, 2016 in the Church of the Crucifixion, 3183 W. Edgewood Ave. Jacksonville, Fl. 32209 with Fr. Bernardino Eikhuemelo, Celebrant. Mrs. Begonia Gilliard Collier passed away February 12, 2016 in a local Hospice facility.Family and friends visitation and Rosary service will be Wednesday, 5 - 6 PM at the mortuary. AKA ceremony will begin at 6PM. Interment in Edgewood Cemetery. Please make donations to American Cancer Society 1430 Prudential Dr, 32207 and Church of the Crucifixion in her memory.
