Obituary for DERRICK DEANDRE MEEKS

DERRICK DEANDRE MEEKS
Derrick Deandre Meeks, the second son of proud parents Apostle AD and Evangelist LB Meeks, was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 4, 1969. He was educated in the Duval County (Florida) Public School System and graduated from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in 1987, as one of the first charter school students. Thereafter, he studied Computer Science at Florida State College (formerly FCCJ) and Remington College in Jacksonville, Florida.

Derrick passionately pursued his hobby of musical composition while also pursuing his career endeavors. He was gainfully employed by several Fortune 500 companies: Anchor Glass Corporation (Jacksonville, Florida), Assistant Manager at Auto Zone Parts Store (Jacksonville, Florida), Department Manager at Walmart (Olive Branch, Mississippi), Johnson & Johnson Corporation (Racine, WI), and worked faithfully as an Armed Guard.

On December 28, 1991, Derrick married the love of his life, the former Miriel Penn, at Jerusalem Temple Church of God in Christ in Leland, Mississippi. This love story produced two beautiful children, Gabrielle and Derrick, Jr. Totally committed to their union – Derrick and Miriel loved fervently and unconditionally to the end.

Derrick’s earliest spiritual upbringing was rooted in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). He was baptized with the Holy Ghost at age nine and began preaching at age 14. There was a fire that burned with Derrick to preach, sing, and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with anyone that listened. In 1991, Derrick was installed as Pastor at Disciples of Christ Christian Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He would later serve as Pastor of the Awakening Power of God’s Word Ministries in Jacksonville, Florida in 2001. Ordained as an Elder and called as a Prophet, Derrick touched many lives through ministry and friendship. His Love for God and Commitment to Holiness inspired and encouraged other believers. He was a “big brother” in the Gospel and loved by many. Throughout his ministerial career, Apostle AD Meeks, served as his Pastor and Overseer.

Derrick will be cherished forever by his beloved wife, Miriel; his daughter, Gabrielle Alivia Meeks (Jacksonville, FL) and son, Derrick Deandre Meeks, Jr (Gainesville, GA); Parents: Apostle AD and Evangelist LB Meeks; Siblings: Elder Andrew Meeks, Jeffrey Meeks (Bernice) of Jacksonville, FL, Lasha Meeks of Pooler, GA, Valerie Yousafzai (Joseph) of Acworth, GA, and Shurnita Jones (Phillip) of Acworth, GA; and one Brother-in-law: Robert Penn (Melody) of Stockbridge, GA. He will truly be missed by his godmother: Mother Annette Brown of Jacksonville, FL; goddaughters: Cailee Chism and Oriyana Polite; Special Friends: Elder Vernon and Felicia Joseph of Jacksonville, FL, and Minister Love of Racine, WI; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
