Obituary for Ann Laverne "Gumma" Stokes

Ann Laverne "Gumma"  Stokes
Mrs. Ann L. Rivers Stokes, affectionately known as “Gumma” was born July 2, 1937 in Eufaula, Alabama to the late Mr. Elroy Rivers, Sr. and Josie Bell Wellborn Rivers. Mrs. Stokes went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 1, 2013. She was educated in Duval County Schools and graduated in the Class of 1955 from Stanton (“Blue Devils”) High School. She was a devoted Christian for many years of life and a faithful member of All Nations Church, Pastor Kenneth A. Williams. She was employed by Duval County School Board and retired after 28 years of service from Hyde Park Elementary School. She was the matriarch of her family and leaves to mourn her husband of 54 years: Herbert Stokes Jr., and her six loving children, Vickie Stokes, Deborah Stokes Barnum (Willie) Charlene Stokes Williams (Kenneth), Larry B. Stokes, Michelle Stokes Evans (Michael), Herbert R. Stokes, III (Deborah), and live- in granddaughter Nekia Puzie and a host of 13 other grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Three brothers, Elroy Rivers, Jr., The late Moses “Bobby” Rivers, and Crawford “Bill” Rivers (Paulette), two sisters, Fannie Bell Williams and Dorothy Webb, an aunt, Mary Wellborn, Eufaula, Alabama, and two uncles, Robert Wellborn (Vera) and Joseph White (Lucille), Orlando, Florida and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Funeral service will be held on August 8, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Greater Macedonia Baptist Church, Dr. Landon L. Williams, Pastor, 1880 Edgewood Avenue West, Jacksonville, Florida 32208. Burial will be at the Edgewood Cemetery, 4519 Edgewood Drive, Jacksonville, Florida immediately after the service. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 5:00 p.m-8:00 p.m., T. S. Warden Funeral Home, 810 W. 44th Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32208.
The funeral service for Ann Laverne Stokes will be held 1PM, Thursday at the Greater Macedonia Baptist Church 1880 Edgewood Ave West. The visitation will be 5 - 8PM, Wednesday at the mortuary .
