Obituary for Edward Charles Brackett

Edward Charles Brackett
Edward Charles Brackett Sr. was born on March 28, 1950 in Plateau, Alabama to the late Timmie Brackett and Alfreda Brackett. He later moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1956 and attended the local schools, graduating from Matthew W. Gilbert Class of 1968. Edward represented himself as a responsible young man at an early age by working multiple jobs to help support his family.

In 1971 Edward worked alongside other perspective firefighters and community leaders to bring about changes to the JFRD and their hiring practices, in a court case that led to a consent decree in 1982 where a judge required the city to hire one African American candidate for every White candidate hired, until racial makeup of the department reflected the city of Jacksonville.

In 1972 he became one of the first African American firefighters in Jacksonville, Florida. He continued to serve his community for 27 years, along the way he was an instrumental part in creating the Jacksonville Brotherhood of firefighters which was designed to give back to the community. While on his journey as a public servant he mentored many young firefighters, as he continued being promoted up the ranks to Captain in the Fire Prevention. Edward was a “counselor on life” for many family members and friends.

Edward was called home on Saturday, August 6, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Timmie Bracket and Alfreda Brackett; two brothers, Timmie Brackett Jr. and Keith Brackett.

Edward leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Annette Brackett; sons, Edward C. Brackett Jr. (Corzetta), Terrance Brackett, and Reginald Brackett; daughters, Regina Wilbert (Antionio) Quanna Wesley and Joanna Wesley; brother, Alfred Brackett (Danita); sisters, Evelyn Williams, Joyce Brackett, Aldine Brown, and Teresa Silcott (Anthony); goddaughter, Shande Perry; grandchildren, Brielle, Elijah, Te’Airah, Ja’Kayla, Morgan, Jamal, Te’Keyrah, Jh’Mari, Tiffany, and Sunjaia; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends including devoted and close friends, Wilbert Robinson and Luther Baker.

The funeral service for Edward Charles Brackett will be held 11:00 am FRIDAY, at the Northside Church of Christ 4736 Avenue B. The visitation will be held 5 - 7:00 pm, Thursday at the mortuary. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Please sign the family guest book and view the video tribute @ www.tswarden.com. Arrangements in care of Tyrone S. Warden, FDIC, 4315 N. Main Street, 765-1234
