Ernestine Cornelius Thomas Holmes was born on August 20, 1942 in Jacksonville, FL. She was predeceased by her father, Ernest C. Thomas, longtime friend William McShay, and daughter Harriett Holmes.
Ernestine later met and married L. C. Holmes and from this union they had six children, She attended the local schools and graduated from Florida Community College at Jacksonville with a degree in Nursing. Ernestine LOVED nursing. She retired from Shands Hospital as a Registered Nurse after 42 years of service, where she was also the President of the Union. Ernestine grew up in Mt. Ararat Baptist Church and accepted Jesus at a young age.
Ernestine leaves to cherish her loving memories, daughter: Veronica Skrine (Delray); 5 sons: L.C. Holmes, Jr. (Stephanie), Harold Holmes, Michael Holmes (Andrea), Darryl Maurice Holmes (Sarah), and Edward Lamont Thomas (Aja); 10 granddaughters: Qiana Holmes, Zemeicia Telfair (Harold), Lonisha Holmes, Nala Holmes, Alleayh Holmes, Jocovia Holmes (Cedrick), Karese Holmes, Kita Youngblood (Russell), Nevah Holmes, and Kimani Bennett; 6 grandsons: Troy Watson, Lonnie Holmes, Amari Holmes (Cynthia), Anthony Thomas(Neeka), Darryl Holmes, Jr., and Tony Skrine (Shatraya); 22 great grandchildren; her mother, Bessie Mae Tutson Thomas; 5 sisters: Richardine Thomas Maffett (John), Elizabeth Manning, Olester Pat Williams, Shirley Thomas Cowan, and Darlene Rivers; sister-in-law Emma Lou Hall; Brothers-in-law Ullyses Holmes (Dot) and Costell Holmes (Lucille); 10 Nieces: Valerie Dantzler, Angela Scott (Gabriel), Terri Manning, Keisha Manning, Dyshawn Vickers, Katrina Denson (Derrick), Cachet Rivers, Kimberly Rivers, Barbara Dyer, and Patricia Hall; 5 nephews: Ernest Williams, Charlie Hall (Sandra), Bernard Hall (Rita), Gregory Hall (Sherrona), and Tony Hall; uncle John Thomas (Rudine); God Daughter Brenda Simon and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ernestine loved playing Phase 10 and eating fish with her mother and sisters every Friday night. But most of all, Ernestine loved Jesus. Ernestine was a daughter, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, a sister, a cousin, an aunt, a niece and a friend. She will be missed by many.
