Obituary for Jessie Gilbert
Jessie Pearl Gilbert, age 93 years, beloved wife of the late Rev. Toney L. Gilbert, Sr. passed with peace and
grace on November 28, with her devoted granddaughter, Sandra at her side. Sister Gilbert was born December 11, 1920 in Dawson, GA where she accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. After moving to Jacksonville, FL, Sis. Gilbert married the late Rev. Toney L. Gilbert, Sr. and became a faithful member of New St. James A.M.E. Church, serving in various church ministries including the Stewardess Board.
In her early years, Sis. Gilbert worked as a seamstress and later became a medical assistant at St. Vincent’s Hospital until her retirement during the 1960’s. Having no children of her own, Sis. Gilbert dedicated herself to her children through marriage, loving them dearly, taking care of her mother and nurturing others with the gospel. Full of wit, humor and compassion, she enjoyed studying the bible, sewing and gardening.
Sis Gilbert is predeceased by her mother Obzene Harris; aunt, Ophelia Crumbleyof Dawson, GA; daughters Cojean Black and Doris Gilbert of Marianna FL; and son John Gilbert of St. Petersburg, FL.
Sis. Gilbert leaves behind four sons, Toney Gilbert Jr (Mable), Elijah Gilbert Sr(Dorothy) of Marianna, FL; Joseph Gilbert of Panama City, FL; Abraham Gilbert of Atlanta GA; daughter Irma Linzy of Marianna, FL, a multitude of grands, great grands, great-great grands; and special cousins Mamie C. Whitfield and Janice Blaylock of Leesburg, GA; caring daughter-in-law Carrol Gilbert of Atlanta, GA; godson and caregiver Michael Finley, goddaughter Lorraine Tooks, and special friend Ivy Archer of Jacksonville FL; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loyal and caring friends.
Services for Mrs. Jessie P. Gilbert, age 93, beloved wife of the late Rev Toney L. Gilbert Sr will be held 11am Sat, Dec 6 at New St James A.M.E. Church, 2128 Forest St., 32204. Interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Family will receive friends Fri, Dec 5 from 5-7pm at Funerals by T. S. Warden, 4315 N. Main Street, 904-765-1234.
