My Precious Former Student

When I started teaching Joshua in First Grade Reading Recovery, a program designed to bring success to the study of reading, he was somewhat shy. But after a couple of lessons, the sweetest little smile would show when I praised him. Soon, the supervising teacher from Clemson University came to evaluate Joshua's reading and my teaching. By then, that sweet smile was always showing when he knew he had done a good job. After a couple of visits, the supervising teacher was so enchanted by Joshua and his progress that she decided to bring the Clemson Department Head of Reading Recovery down to Williston, SC to access Joshua's work. He, too, was impressed by Joshua's approach to gaining meaning from the written word. It seemed that one could see his "mental wheels" turning as he thought through groups of difficult words. The professor took out a book that Joshua had never read before and talked to him about the story. Finally, he told Joshua that he had written the book. Joshua read the book using the skills he had been taught. After he finished reading the book, the professor said, "Good reading, Joshua." With his winning smile showing, Joshua said, "Good writing, professor." Joshua has been dear to me since that year in first grade and will continue to be precious to me.
