Obituary for Leevater Calvin

Leevater Calvin
Mrs. Leevater Banks Calvin was born on April 4, 1934 in Lyons, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. Shelly and Louisiana Banks. She came to Jacksonville at an early age and attended the local schools. She was a member of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) all while maintaining her home and raising her seven children. Mrs. Calvin had the capability to fulfill many roles in life; counselor, teacher, seamstress, baker, chief, inventor, gardener, bookkeeper, financial advisor, spiritual, health and problem solver.

Education was a primary factor for her children. She always stressed the importance of obtaining a good education. That’s why she did all she could to provide for her children everything that they needed; not necessarily what they wanted, but always what was needed, to succeed in life. She would often go without having what she needed to ensure that her children had whatever supplies was needed for their schooling. She met her loving husband of 64 years in Jacksonville. During their marriage, they always remembered their anniversary, each other’s birthday, and special occasions.

They enjoyed their lives together listening to the sounds of jazz and recreational activities with their children. Playing softball, kickball, backyard fish fry and bar-b-cue, drive-in movie on the back of the pickup truck, going to the beach, and of course going to Sunday church were all family activities.

She was affectionally known by many as Mother Calvin or Mom Calvin because of her caring, loving, nurturing, no-nonsense demeanor…what she said is what she meant! Nevertheless, she had a God-fearing heart, a faithful member of Mother Midway AME Church where she served as a Stewardesses and on the Hospitality Committee. Prior to joining Mother Midway, she was an active member of Allen Chapel AME Church, her childhood church, where she served in many roles. She knew the Lord, prayed, read the Word

daily, and inspired others to read God’s Word. Many wonderful times were spent with daily conversations from her favorite niece Joyce Elaine King, Yvonne Calvin, dear friend, Queenell Henderson, God-daughter, Leroy Banks, brother, and Mary Bruce, sister. In spite of working since her childhood, she had a wonderful sense of humor with a genuine meaning of life’s lessons.

Mom Calvin leaves to cherish her loving memories her loving children, Rev. Charletta C. Robinson, 1SG Ret. Barbara F. Simpson, Charlie Calvin, Jr. (Willetta), Robert A. “Tony” Calvin, SFC Ret. Donna R. Broomfield, John C. “Chris” Calvin, Lottie M “Lee” Washington (LT Ret.
