Obituary for Leola Bruton Stroughter

Leola Bruton Stroughter
"At first, the infant"
Lula Leola Patricia Bruton Stroughter was the youngest daughter and the eighth of nine children born to George Bruton, Sr. and Lula Wormack Bruton. She was born on December 18, 1928 in Jacksonville, Florida.

"Then, the vivacious school girl"
Leola established her Christian foundation at New Bethel AME Church where her father was a founding member. She was a fun-loving youth that loved to dance, chat with her girlfriends, and follow her brothers on their bicycles. Leola lost her older brother, Wilbert and her mother during her school-age years. Her older brothers, Bismark and Willie, passed away before she was born.

"And then, the lover"
Leola met her husband, Acie Stroughter, Jr. while attending Edward Waters College. After 13 years of marriage and four children, Acie preceded her in death far too soon in 1962.

"Then, a soldier"
Like a mother bear protecting her cubs, Leola fiercely looked out for the well-being of her children, nieces, nephews, and other children in the community. Leola raised her five children and cared for numerous others in her home, including her brother, George’s children. She was affectionately called, 'Sister' by many who knew her. An excellent cook, all the children looked forward to her sweet potato and lemon meringue pies during the holidays. Her cornbread dressing and gravy was another family favorite. Leola always looked out for her family and could be counted on for a hot breakfast by any family members who came by. She especially looked out for her father and older sister, Mozelle in their later years.

"And then, the justice"
After raising her children, gaining much wisdom along the way, Aunt Leola was always the family member who would listen to your concerns. She always kept abreast of what was going on about town and in the community. Leola was the soul of her family. Whenever you wanted to know what was going on in the family, all you had to do was spend some time with Leola.  Everyone loved to sit and talk with her.

"The sixth age " shifts into the lean and slippered"
Aging, as we all must inevitably do, Leola enjoyed watching the fruits of her labor. Her children and grandchildren, live their lives. She loved plants and would collect clippings to plant in her garden. Sadly, she said goodbye to her elder siblings, Robert, Sr., Mozelle, and James, Sr.

"Last scene" of all, that ends this strange eventful history,"
Leola departed this life on Tuesday, February 9, 2016. She leaves to mourn her loss her two brothers, George Bruton, Jr. and Bertram Bruton; her five children, Acie III (Sandra), Jeanette, Bertram, Reginald, and Ronald (Calromea); ten grandchildren; Acie Raynard (Veatrize), Keith (Janet), Eric (Allisha), Terry Hall (Jerrica), Reginald Fullwood (LaTasha), Reginald, Jr. (Keatron), Ronald, Jr. (Amalia), LaTarsha Wright, Tiffany Mitchell, Danielle Mitchell; twenty-four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
