Obituary

Obituary for Martha Smalls (Salley)

Sister Martha Salley Smalls, affectionately known as “Outlaw”, was born March 09, 1931 to the late Clinton and Anna Liza Salley in Blackville, South Carolina. She was called to rest from her earthly home on Friday, January 24, 2020.

Martha was married to George Smalls, Jr. and from that union three children were born: Luemisher, George, and Emma. After the failed marriage, Martha moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Seeking a fresh start at life. Martha worked tirelessly to give her children a good life. She knew God had to guide her.

Martha worked in the food service profession for many years. She retired from the Duval County School Board in 1993. Upon retirement, Martha enjoyed gardening, walking the neighborhood, and befriending those who came her way. She had a great sense of humor, most enjoyed by nephews and nieces. She would spend countless hours talking and encouraging those she loved by telephone.

Martha was a member of First Chronicles Baptist Church.

Martha was preceded in death by her siblings: Georgia Mae, Jimmy, Mary Ann, Izell, Wesley, and Mary (her twin).

She leaves to celebrate and cherish her memory, her daughter, Luemisher J. Felder (Cleveland) of Atlanta, Georgia; son, George Smalls of Atlanta, Georgia; and daughter, Emma Buckles (Lemmie) of Jacksonville; sister, Janice Salley of New York City, New York; grandchildren: Maurice James, Yalanda Kearse (D’Andre), Eartha Manigult, and Christopher Smalls (Tisha); nine great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; brother-in-law, Felones Smalls (Ruth) of Denmark, South Carolina; sisters-in-law, Mamie Salley and Allene Grier of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Laura Smalls of Denmark, South Carolina; godchildren: David and Mary Wyman; a loving and caregiving niece, Essie Sabb (James). We acknowledge nieces: Barbara Williams, Gerald Ann Cotton, Willie Mae Donaldson, and also nephew, Ernest Salley for their constant show of concern. She also leaves a host of nephews, nieces, and friends. We will always be grateful for the friendship of Annie Rivers, Fannie Richo, Kim, Santresse and Keturah Young, and Annie Colon.
