Robert Lee Spaulding, 96, a member of two very prominent McIntosh County families, passed away on Saturday, July 27th at Community Hospice in Jacksonville, FL.
Bob, as he preferred being called, was born in McIntosh County on July 8, 1917 to Henry Spaulding, Jr. and Hannah Lewis Spaulding. He was the grandson of Henry Spaulding, Sr. and Roberta Scott Spaulding of Bodge Field (now Spaulding’s Point) in Shellman Bluff, and George Lewis and Lucy (Bacon) Lewis of Sapelo Island. He received his early education in the school system of Darien and Jacksonville, FL.

It was in Jacksonville that he met, and married Maude Bivins. They moved to Brooklyn, NY where he became an entrepreneur - selling shoes, owned and operated a Taxi Cab Company, a Laundry Mat, and a Dry Cleaners. To this union was born one daughter, Vermelle, who preceded him in death.
Many young people from McIntosh County began their careers in New York either through Bob, or working with or for him. 

In 1956 he married Mattie Lee Cloud, and the two of them owned and operated a Day Care Business until they retired in the mid 1990’s, and relocated to Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maude Spaulding and Lula M. Spaulding; grandparents, wives, Maude and Mattie; sister, Louise Spaulding, 1 grandchild, Hussein Sharrieff and 2 great- grandchildren, Shafika, and Lucille.

Mr. Spaulding leaves to mourn his passing two grandsons, Hassan (Linda) Sharrieff, of Stone Mountain, GA and Jamiel Sharrieff, of Arlington, Texas; 10 great grandchildren, Aiesha, Khadejah, Kyra, Shoinka, Robert, Hassan, Hussein, Hassan, Jr. Shareen, Nika; 6 Great-Great grandchildren; three sisters, Gloria Dumas, A. Laverne Rease, and Ester Spaulding; 4 brothers, Eddie B. Morgan, Jack L. Morgan, and Jesse R. Spaulding (Janelle), Emmanuel (Lois) Gooden, all of Jacksonville, FL.; four sisters-in-law Thelma Craig, & Joe Ann Lawson (Willie) of Buffalo, NY; Ella Smith, & Beatrice Caldwell of Rock Hill, SC; one brother-in-law, Charles Caldwell (Barbara), Orange, NJ. among the cousins are Gloria Delegal Stevens, & Vivian S. Holmes, St. Simon Is, GA, Julian Stevens, Jr. (Min. Alfreda), Glenville, GA, Idella S. White, Shellman Bluff, GA, Nelson Spaulding, IV (Janeice), Fremont, CA, Wyndi S. Shabazz, Gracie Mitchell Chandler (Tommy), Ronald E. Thomas (Min. Jennifer), Douglas Hall, Claudine H. Johnson, and Barbara H. Goggin (Anthony) all of Jacksonville, FL, Susan S. Burke (Victor), Monroeville, PA, Dr. William H. A. Collins, Darien, GA, Sandra Spaulding Jackson (Rev. Leonard), Ben Lewis & Rev. Carolyn Lewis Dowse, Savannah, GA, Mike Lewis (Delores), Brunswick, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other cousins.
The funeral service for Robert Webb will be held 11AM, Saturday at the Church of Christ at US Hwy 1 - 6452 New Kings Road. The visitation will be 5 - 7PM, Friday at the Church.
