Obituary for Robert Andrew Taylor

Robert Andrew Taylor
Robert Andrew (“Bob”) Taylor was born to Edward Taylor and Tabitha Mae (“Toby”) Long in Jacksonville, Florida on March 28, 1941.

Bob attended local elementary schools and completed his secondary education in Powhatan, Virginia, graduating with honors from St. Emma Military Academy. Renown for being an exceptionally bright man, Bob attended St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas, integrated Jacksonville University and later obtained his degree from Jones College.

Bob had an entrepreneurial spirit and owned various companies, including the Jam Man Record Shop, an upholstery shop and a fencing business. After exploring careers as a counselor at the juvenile detention center, a postal carrier, a counselor at the drug rehabilitation center, a substitute teacher and an insurance salesman for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Florida, he enjoyed a long career as an engineer for Southern Bell Telephone Company (BellSouth), retiring in 1999.

Bob was very eclectic and well-versed in many things. He enjoyed chess, taught himself to play piano, organ, electric and acoustic guitar, producing two records of his own: “Send Me No Flowers” and “The Rooster Song”. He performed at the Edgewood Lounge as a singer during the late 1960’s and a choir director and organist for St. Pius V Catholic Church during the early 1970’s. Passionate about social justice, Bob was a regular contributor of letters to the editor for the Florida Times-Union newspaper. He also enjoyed watching the Jacksonville Jaguars (affectionately called the “Cardiac Cats”).

Bob was affiliated with North Florida Multiple Sclerosis Society as a board member, a Book and Candle VA board member, Horizons Unlimited board member, president of the American Achievement Institute and a very proud and active member of the Trustee Board of Bethel Baptist Institutional Church. One of his greatest joys was to enter a trustee meeting with a couple of boxes from The Donut Shoppe. Bob will be best remembered as an amazing and highly intelligent gentleman who carried himself with dignity and pride, extending kindness to all while bestowing his brilliant smile upon everyone and sharing captivating stories about any and every topic.

Bob transitioned peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. He was predeceased by Alainna Laverne McIntel Taylor, his devoted wife of 33 years.

Bob is survived by his six children: Regina Taylor-Murphy, Ron Taylor, Sr. (LaTonya), Robin Taylor, Roman Taylor (Christy), Rachel Bolton (Scott) and RuthAshley Taylor; grandchildren; Kevin Morgan, Randal Murphy (Devin), Aaliyah Taylor, Kris German, Ronald Taylor, Jr., Damion Murphy II and Lily Taylor; great-grandchildren; Jaylen Luttmann, Kaden German, Damion Murphy III, Tobias Murphy and Damarion Murphy. Bob’s memory is also cherished by his sisters-in-law, Jonette McIntel Johnson and Estella Groover (Jimmy); nephew, Washington Bennefield (Patti); cousin, Patricia Stewart; many cousins of the Bettye Davis family and joined by a host of many sorrowing relatives and friends.
